About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Engineer to serve as a technical leader and force multiplier within our engineering team. In this role, you will address our most critical architectural challenges related to data modeling, API development, and platform scalability. Your expertise will directly influence our ability to scale our platform, accelerate engineering velocity, and establish a culture of technical and operational excellence. As we expand from acute care into assisted and independent living, you will play a pivotal role in a foundational architectural shift, shaping the future of our technology stack. The role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams including product, design, infrastructure, machine learning, and quality assurance to drive both architecture and best practices as we grow our product offerings.
Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in backend systems architecture
  • Deep expertise in data modeling, distributed systems, and API design (REST and/or GraphQL)
  • Proven ability to influence and lead technical direction without direct authority
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders
  • Strong mentorship skills with a track record of elevating team capabilities
  • Pragmatic problem-solving approach to technical debt and feature development
  • High degree of humility, kindness, and thoughtfulness in collaboration
  • Proficiency in backend programming languages such as TypeScript, Node.js, and React
  • Active use of AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code) for automating tasks and complex integrations
  • Experience with event-driven systems like Kafka, RabbitMQ, or AWS IoT Core
  • Proven experience managing cloud infrastructure, serverless applications, and ensuring performance and scalability
  • Expertise in scaling and maintaining SQL and NoSQL databases, including schema design and capacity planning

Responsibilities

  • Own the long-term vision and implementation of core data models and internal API architecture, ensuring scalability, consistency, and comprehensive documentation
  • Lead the design of next-generation data architecture to support new product lines and business models, collaborating closely with ML and Data teams
  • Make architectural decisions that enable development velocity, security, reliability, and repeatability across teams
  • Teach and promote modern best practices for systems design, API architecture, automated testing, observability, and security
  • Mentor engineers through pairing, code reviews, and technical design sessions to elevate organizational skills
  • Design and implement standardized API layers and automated testing practices to reduce feature lead times and increase developer confidence
  • Establish critical integration test patterns and enforce coverage to ensure high-quality deliverables
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure architecture aligns with product and business goals
