About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Machine Learning Engineer to join our Core Automation Team. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in developing and deploying AI infrastructure and automation solutions that enhance operational efficiency, improve customer support, and drive compliance initiatives. Your work will involve exploring advanced machine learning techniques, including large language models (LLMs) and deep learning, to solve complex challenges across Coinbase’s ecosystem. You will collaborate closely with management and stakeholders to translate strategic objectives into actionable plans, manage project priorities, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, scalable AI solutions. Your expertise will contribute to breaking down barriers to cryptocurrency adoption and shaping the future of AI-powered customer interactions, ultimately helping Coinbase realize its vision of an open and inclusive financial system.
Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in machine learning and software engineering
• Proven expertise in designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production services with a focus on data processing, machine learning, and analytics
• Hands-on experience with at least one ML model type, such as LLMs, GNNs, Deep Learning, Logistic Regression, or Gradient Boosting Trees
• Proficiency in data mining, information retrieval, advanced statistics, natural language processing, or computer vision
• Ability to write high-quality, well-tested code that effectively addresses customer needs
• Experience mentoring and developing junior engineers, implementing processes, and setting high standards for excellence
• Passion for building an open financial system that connects the world
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a commitment to open and transparent practices

Nice to haves include a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Mining, Statistics, or a related field, along with proficiency in GenAI frameworks/tools such as Apache Airflow, Spark, Flink, Kafka/Kinesis, Snowflake, and Databricks. Familiarity with model interpretability, responsible AI practices, and data visualization is also advantageous.
Responsibilities

• Explore and implement advanced machine learning techniques, including large language models and deep learning, to address organizational challenges
• Collaborate with management and stakeholders to define strategic roadmaps and translate them into quarterly plans
• Manage project execution by prioritizing tasks, meeting deadlines, and ensuring deliverables align with organizational goals
• Develop and maintain high-quality, well-tested Python code to support critical product and business needs
• Design scalable, secure AI/ML systems using industry best practices and cutting-edge technologies
• Mentor team members on design principles, coding standards, and AI productivity tools to foster a culture of excellence
• Troubleshoot complex technical issues, enhancing system reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency
• Conduct thorough reviews to ensure security, architectural integrity, and scalability of feature designs across teams
