About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Data Engineer to join our dynamic team supporting the Defense Health Agency (DHA). The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in designing, developing, and implementing data-centric solutions that facilitate data integration, migration, and transformation. This role is pivotal in supporting DHA’s modernization initiatives, particularly in migrating legacy health IT systems into secure, cloud-first architectures. The Data Engineer will work closely with technical teams and stakeholders to develop scalable, resilient, and compliant data solutions that enhance DHA’s enterprise health IT ecosystem. Effective communication skills are essential, as the role requires interaction with both technical peers and non-technical stakeholders such as program managers and clinical staff to ensure that data solutions align with mission objectives and regulatory standards.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a data engineering role
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- Expert-level proficiency in SQL and relational database management systems (SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL)
- Hands-on experience with ETL processes and data migration techniques
- Strong understanding of data profiling, quality assessments, and validation techniques
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS (Amazon Web Services) and Microsoft Azure
- Knowledge of CI/CD methodologies and related tools for database development
- Experience working within Agile Scrum environments
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in remote or hybrid team settings
- U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance
Responsibilities
- Perform data profiling, quality assessments, and validation of relational databases to support DHA data governance initiatives
- Design, develop, and maintain ETL pipelines to facilitate data integration and migration from legacy systems to modern platforms such as Salesforce, AWS GovCloud, and Advana-aligned environments
- Support the creation of authoritative data repositories and data lakes to promote interoperability and enterprise analytics
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to build scalable, secure, and resilient data solutions aligned with DHA’s enterprise data strategy
- Partner with technical leads and stakeholders to ensure solutions meet mission requirements, regulatory standards (HIPAA, FedRAMP, DoD IL), and customer expectations
- Document ETL source-target mappings and maintain comprehensive source-target documentation
- Implement and support cloud-based ETL tools such as DBT, Airflow, and legacy tools like Informatica and SSIS
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by staying updated on emerging data technologies and best practices
- Ensure all data solutions comply with security policies and standards, including HIPAA and FedRAMP
