About The Role
The Data Engineer will be a key contributor to the CDC Foundation’s Workforce Acceleration Initiative (WAI), supporting the Great Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center (GPTEC). This position involves designing, developing, and maintaining robust data infrastructure to facilitate efficient data receipt, processing, storage, and analysis. The Data Engineer will collaborate closely with data content experts, analysts, data scientists, and IT teams to develop scalable data pipelines and architectures that support GPTEC’s mission to enhance public health data systems for 18 tribal communities. The role emphasizes building cloud-based, user-friendly, and secure data solutions that enable tribal, state, and federal agencies to conduct epidemiological investigations, surveillance, and reporting. This is a fully remote position based in the United States, with up to 10% domestic travel as needed. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing public health data capabilities and supporting tribal health initiatives through innovative data engineering practices.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Master’s or PhD degree (e.g., MPH) preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in data engineering or related fields.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, Scala, or SQL.
  • Experience with big data technologies like Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, and Flink.
  • Strong understanding of relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra).
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms and data warehousing tools.
  • Expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and data integration techniques.
  • Knowledge of engineering best practices including source control, automated testing, CI/CD, and peer review.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric is preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a virtual environment with remote teams.
  • Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Create and manage data systems and pipelines to ensure reliable and efficient data flow, including ingestion, processing, storage, and security.
  • Collaborate with data scientists and analysts to connect dashboards to data pipelines and manage data management systems.
  • Extract data from diverse sources, perform cleaning and transformation to ensure accuracy and consistency, and load data into storage solutions.
  • Optimize data pipelines and infrastructure for performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Monitor system performance, troubleshoot errors, and implement solutions to address anomalies.
  • Implement and maintain security measures to safeguard sensitive data and ensure compliance with data privacy standards.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to understand data requirements and develop scalable solutions aligned with organizational goals.
  • Design and manage data storage architectures, including relational and NoSQL databases and data warehouses.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in data engineering, and incorporate them into the organization’s infrastructure.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members and partners.
  • Communicate technical concepts effectively to non-technical stakeholders, including updates and findings.
  • Participate in up to 10% domestic travel as required for project needs and stakeholder engagement.
