About The Role
The Staff Software Engineer - Full Stack is a senior-level individual contributor role that combines technical expertise with leadership qualities. This position requires a highly experienced engineer capable of working independently with minimal oversight, leading complex projects, and influencing technical decisions across teams. The role involves planning and executing on project roadmaps, collaborating with stakeholders, and advocating for the best technical solutions to meet program objectives.
As a key member of our team, you will serve as a subject matter expert, guiding best practices in software engineering, and helping to shape the technical direction of our projects. You will be responsible for reducing system ambiguity through documentation, refactoring, and automation, ensuring that systems are maintainable and scalable. Your ability to communicate complex technical topics effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences will be vital, especially when presenting to stakeholders, supporting bid proposals, or participating in client-facing demonstrations.
This role offers the opportunity to work on meaningful projects that impact public service delivery, particularly within the Veterans Affairs space. You will have the autonomy to lead initiatives, influence engineering practices, and support adjacent programs within the business unit, all while contributing to a collaborative and inclusive remote work environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 9+ years of engineering experience, with relevant years of experience substituting for formal education
- At least 5+ years of native mobile development experience
- At least 2+ years of hands-on experience with TypeScript and React Native
- Experience with Ruby on Rails
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle, best practices, and modern development tools
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Proven ability to lead technical projects independently and collaborate effectively within teams
- Experience working in agile environments and remote teams is preferred
Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, development, and execution of complex software projects with minimal supervision
- Act as a subject matter expert, providing technical guidance and mentorship to team members
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define project scope, requirements, and technical solutions
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable full-stack applications utilizing React Native, TypeScript, and Ruby on Rails
- Refactor and improve existing systems to enhance performance, maintainability, and scalability
- Document system architecture, code, and processes to reduce ambiguity and facilitate future development
- Automate testing and deployment processes to ensure reliable releases
- Present technical solutions and project updates effectively to diverse audiences, including clients and leadership
- Proactively identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices in software engineering
- Support adjacent programs within the business unit, contributing to a cohesive technical strategy

The actual compensation offered will depend on factors such as experience, skills, and responsibilities. The starting pay range for this role is $135,000 to $150,000.
