Role summary

Maximus, a growing telehealth company focused on performance medicine, seeks a Lead Engineer to manage its Growth engineering team. This hybrid role (50% management, 50% hands-on development) will optimize the customer acquisition funnel, focusing on conversion rates. Responsibilities include leading a team of 4-8 engineers, running growth experiments, designing funnels, and mentoring the team. The ideal candidate has experience with React, TypeScript, Ruby on Rails, experiment design, and subscription platforms like Stripe. This remote position offers the chance to significantly impact company growth and technical direction.

About The Company
Maximus is a mission-driven consumer performance medicine telehealth company dedicated to optimizing health, wellness, and hormonal balance for men and women. With a focus on content, community, and clinical support, Maximus has established itself as a profitable organization with an eight-figure annual recurring revenue (ARR) and consistent year-over-year growth. Backed by top Silicon Valley venture capital firms such as Founders Fund and 8VC, as well as leading angel investors and operators from prominent companies like Bulletproof, Tinder, Coinbase, Daily Stoic, and Shopify, Maximus is well-positioned for continued expansion. The company has raised $15 million in funding and maintains a strong cash position to support its growth initiatives.
In addition to its core telehealth services, Maximus offers Maximus Labs, a standalone biomarker testing subscription that serves as an acquisition channel into its telemedicine protocols. The company aims to double its customer base this year by building a robust acquisition engine that emphasizes product quality and conversion optimization over aggressive advertising spend. Maximus operates in a competitive landscape against brands like Hims, Hone, Keeps, and Fella, differentiating itself through superior product offerings and a conversion-driven growth strategy.
About The Role
Maximus is seeking a highly skilled Lead Engineer (Tech Lead) to spearhead its Growth engineering team. This role involves a balanced mix of management and hands-on development, with an approximate 50/50 split. The Lead Engineer will be responsible for owning and optimizing the lower acquisition funnel, from the initial flow start through to checkout, across all of Maximus’s protocols. The primary metric for success is the conversion rate from flow start to checkout (CVR), with a secondary focus on retention metrics to ensure quality user engagement.
The ideal candidate will manage a small team of engineers, collaborating closely with a Senior Product Manager and Senior Designer. Reporting directly to the Head of Engineering, the Lead Engineer will play a pivotal role in setting the technical direction for customer acquisition, running experiments that impact revenue, and building a scalable, efficient engineering team. This role offers an opportunity to influence critical growth initiatives and contribute to the company's strategic objectives.
Qualifications

  • Experience leading a team of 4-8 engineers with a proven track record of team growth and retention
  • Hands-on experience shipping and measuring growth experiments within subscription-based products
  • Proficiency in Ruby on Rails (preferably Rails 7 / Ruby 3.3) and React (preferably React 18 / TypeScript 5.4), with the ability to write and review production code
  • Strong understanding of experiment design, including metric selection, sample sizing, and trade-off analysis
  • Experience designing and optimizing funnels, cohort analysis, and subscription architecture
  • Familiarity with event-sourced systems or similar architectures where state is derived from event streams
  • Comfort with agentic AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Devin, or similar, and experience integrating them into development workflows
  • Knowledge of payment platforms like Stripe and Klarna, and experience with experimentation and analytics tools such as Amplitude

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of A/B experiments across signup flows, checkout processes, plan pricing, and product recommendations using analytics tools like Amplitude
  • Ship full-stack features related to the acquisition funnel, utilizing Rails and React
  • Mentor and develop the engineering team through regular 1:1s, pair programming, code reviews, and career development discussions
  • Design and oversee experiments, including sample sizing, metric selection, and balancing conversion with retention goals
  • Continuously iterate on and optimize plan and pricing architectures, integrating payment platforms effectively
  • Build and maintain robust experimentation infrastructure to support ongoing testing and learning
  • Partner with data engineering teams to instrument cohort-level retention tracking for experiments
  • Drive the adoption of AI-assisted development tools to increase engineering velocity and quality
  • Ensure best practices in code quality, deployment, and system reliability across the growth engineering initiatives

Benefits

  • Comprehensive health, medical, and dental coverage for US and Canada employees
  • Flexible vacation and time-off policies to support work-life balance
  • Equity participation through high-potential stock options with liquidity opportunities
  • Extended options exercise window, allowing employees to exercise options over a period of three months for each year of service
  • Opportunity to work remotely from North America or South America, fostering a flexible and inclusive work environment
  • Participation in a fast-growing, innovative company with a focus on impactful health solutions
