About The Role
We are seeking a talented Backend/API Engineer to join our Money as a Service (MaaS) team. This team oversees a broad portfolio of Stripe's core financial products and platforms, including accounts, money movement, storage, crypto, and banking as a service. As a Backend/API Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, and maintaining scalable APIs and systems that facilitate billions of dollars in money movement requests globally. Your work will directly impact how businesses of all sizes access and manage funds across borders, ensuring reliability, security, and performance at scale. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including infrastructure, product management, and engineering, to deliver innovative solutions that meet the dynamic needs of our users. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on complex financial systems that power the internet economy, contributing to Stripe’s mission of making financial infrastructure accessible and efficient worldwide.
Qualifications

• 2-12+ years of industry experience in software engineering (excluding internships and co-ops)
• Proficiency in one or more programming languages (language agnostic in the interview process)
• Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively across teams and workstreams
• Ability to operate with high autonomy and take ownership of projects
• Interest in working as a generalist across various technologies and stacks
• Experience or interest in large-scale financial tracking or payment systems (preferred)
• Knowledge of cloud-based services such as AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, gRPC, and GraphQL (preferred)

Responsibilities

• Scope, design, build, and maintain APIs, services, and large-scale systems to handle billions of money movement requests reliably and efficiently
• Debug and resolve critical production issues across multiple services and levels of the technology stack
• Mentor junior engineers to foster growth and development within the team
• Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to develop new features and improve existing systems at scale
• Enhance internal engineering standards, tooling, and processes to optimize performance and reliability
• Participate actively in a distributed and hybrid team environment, maintaining open communication and strong team connections
