About The Role
We are seeking an experienced Engineering Leader to oversee the development and evolution of our enterprise-wide design system. This leadership role involves guiding the technical strategy, architecture, and implementation of a scalable, accessible, and high-performance UI component platform that supports both web and mobile applications across the organization. The ideal candidate will partner closely with design, product, accessibility, and engineering teams to ensure the design system remains a trusted foundation for digital experiences. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence enterprise standards, drive innovation through AI integration, and lead a talented team dedicated to building a cohesive and efficient design ecosystem. The position is flexible for remote work within the U.S., with some in-office requirements for candidates in Minneapolis or Washington, D.C.
Qualifications
- Degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 6+ years of experience in frontend/UI engineering with expertise in modern frameworks such as React, Vue, Angular, or similar
- 2+ years of experience managing and developing high-performing engineering teams
- Proven track record of building, scaling, and maintaining enterprise-grade design systems or component libraries
- Strong architectural skills including experience with design tokens, theming systems, accessibility standards (WCAG), and cross-platform considerations
- Strategic mindset with the ability to translate long-term vision into actionable roadmaps
Responsibilities
- Serve as the senior strategic thinker and technical leader for the design system team, defining its vision and roadmap
- Lead the integration of AI-powered design tooling, including automated component scaffolding, design-to-code workflows, and accessibility auditing
- Establish and promote governance models for contribution, versioning, deprecation, and adoption metrics to ensure consistent usage across product teams
- Architect scalable, performant, and accessible component libraries adhering to WCAG standards and modern frontend best practices
- Define technical standards for component development, including API design, theming architecture, testing strategies, and performance benchmarks
- Lead research and prototyping of emerging technologies such as AI-assisted design tools, design tokens, and headless UI patterns
- Manage, mentor, and grow a team of engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning
- Partner with cross-functional teams to align the design system roadmap with organizational priorities and gather feedback for continuous improvement
- Drive the adoption and developer experience of the design system by ensuring comprehensive documentation, ease of use, and friction reduction
- Communicate progress, technical strategy, and business value to executive leadership, securing support and resources for strategic initiatives
