Director of Data Engineering
Role summary
A high-growth, AI-forward SaaS company is seeking a hands-on Director of Data Engineering to lead and scale their data engineering function. This role will own the end-to-end data platform, focusing on modernization with Databricks, AWS, and a scalable lakehouse architecture. The Director will lead a growing team of data engineers, establish best practices in data modeling and governance, and partner cross-functionally to ensure data reliability and scalability. The position requires 10+ years of data engineering experience, including 3+ years in a leadership capacity, and a strong background in building and scaling complex data platforms. Experience with AI/ML integration is preferred.
We’re working with a high-growth, AI-forward SaaS company that’s building a modern, data-driven platform powering both B2B and B2C experiences. The team is investing heavily in their data infrastructure and looking for a hands-on leader to own and scale their data engineering function.
This role will take ownership of the current and future state of the data platform, partnering closely with engineering, product, and business teams to ensure data is reliable, scalable, and directly enabling core business operations.
This is a full time, permanent position. The team works onsite 4 days a week in NYC (Flatiron), with 1 day remote. We are looking to hire someone immediately.
Responsibilities
:
• Own the end-to-end data platform, including ingestion, transformation, modeling, and data serving layers
• Lead and grow a team of data engineers (currently ~3–4, scaling to ~8 this year)
• Drive modernization of the data stack, with a focus on Databricks, AWS, and scalable lakehouse architecture
• Establish best practices around data modeling, governance, MDM, and data quality
• Partner cross-functionally to align data architecture with product, analytics, and operational needs
• Support real-time and batch data use cases that power core business workflows
• Act as an escalation point for platform reliability and performance (including occasional pager duty involvement)
• Help shape how AI is leveraged across the data ecosystem and broader business
Must-Have Skills
:
• 10+ years of experience in data engineering / data platform roles
• 3+ years leading data engineering teams (while remaining hands-on)
• Strong experience with modern data stacks (Databricks, AWS, Spark, etc.)
• Background in building and scaling data platforms in complex environments
• Experience with data modeling, governance, and scalable data architecture
• Comfort operating in fast-paced environments where data is central to the product and business
• Exposure to AI/ML or strong interest in leveraging AI in data workflows
Nice to Have Skills

• Experience in regulated environments or working with sensitive data
• Experience supporting both internal analytics and customer-facing data products
