Cell Test Engineer, Reliability Testing
Role summary
Tesla is seeking a Cell Test Engineer focused on Reliability Testing to evaluate the electrochemical performance and product reliability of large-format in-house battery cells. This role involves developing and executing test plans, analyzing data, and ensuring data integrity. The engineer will be responsible for integrating mechanical and electrochemical testing, partnering with design and quality teams, and contributing to the improvement of Tesla's battery cells for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The position also requires mentoring team members and collaborating within cross-functional product development teams. A background in engineering with knowledge of electrochemical test equipment and coding experience (MATLAB, Python) is essential.
What to Expect
Our team test and qualify Tesla’s large-format in-house cells for electrochemical performance and product reliability. We work with Cell Manufacturing team and other cross functional teams to deepen our understanding of our battery cells and to improve product performance. We develop cycle life test plans to evaluate battery performance over time and monitor capacity fade and impedance growth, set up new fixtures and execute the plan that enables battery cell performance.
What You'll Do
- We are looking for a highly motivated and passionate professionals to work on disruptive cutting-edge battery electrode technology that enables Tesla electric vehicles and energy storage systems to be more efficient and reliable
- Be the Reliability testing owner of the team, tying mechanical-based testing with electrochemical tests. Partner with cell design and quality teams to execute trials that capture impact of edge case scenarios and contribute to holistically improving Tesla’s In-house cells
- In this role, you will execute and shepherd lithium-ion cell tests using cell cycling equipment, temperature control fixtures and circulators
- This role will also write test plans, propose design of experiments, summarize results in test reports, and ensure the highest possible data integrity from the lab
- Mentor direct and larger team members in the science of cell characterizations and reliability engineering
- It is essential to be able to plan, prioritize, and communicate status of lab testing activities to hit project deadlines
- Be a member of a cross functional product development team to help determine the ideal cell design for Tesla products
What You'll Bring
- Degree or relevant experience in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related field
- Self-motivated and a self-starter with hands-on skills
- Ability to develop new test concepts and methods, and execute independently
- Some knowledge of electrochemical test equipment used in battery cell testing or equivalent
- Strong communication skills and collaborative mindset
- Understanding of lithium-ion cell safety and its risks
- Some coding experience required (i.e. MATLAB, Python, and/or similar data analysis and statistics tools)
