Role summary

Uber's Ad Supply team is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the technical vision for their new Offsite Ads business vertical. This full-stack role involves architecting and building the foundational supply layer that dynamically renders and integrates premium ad formats into external environments. You will bridge Uber's internal ad-serving infrastructure with third-party channels, focusing on creating seamless, high-performance, and intent-driven ad experiences. The position requires 10+ years of experience in large-scale web architecture and distributed backend systems, with expertise in modern web technologies (React, TypeScript, Node.js) and microservices (Go or Java). You will also lead 0 to 1 initiatives and have familiarity with the Ad-Tech ecosystem.

About the Role
The Ad Supply team is the engine of Consumer Experience for Uber's Offsite Ads business. We are responsible for expanding Uber's advertising reach beyond our native apps, creating intentful sessions for users across the open web. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead the technical vision for how Uber's premium ad formats are dynamically rendered and integrated into external environments. This isn't about maintaining legacy systems. You are building the foundational supply layer for a brand-new business vertical at Uber.
This is a high-impact, full-stack role where you will bridge the gap between Uber's internal ad-serving infrastructure and the vast ecosystem of third-party channels. You will architect the systems that deliver "shoppable" and intent-driven ad experiences, ensuring they are as seamless and performant on an external site as they are within the Uber app.
What You'll Do

  • Drive Consumer Experience: Lead the engineering effort to expand reach and intentful sessions by building robust, high-fidelity ad products.
  • Architect Scalable Supply: Design and implement the technical "bridge" that allows ad content to surface across multiple channels while maintaining strict performance standards.
  • Optimize UX Flows: Execute on onsite UX improvements and "shoppable" ad features to ensure a frictionless journey from ad interaction to conversion.
  • Collaborate Across "Big Rocks": Partner with Ad Delivery on identity matching and Data & Measurement to ensure all consumer interactions are correctly instrumented.
  • Technical Strategy: Define the long-term architecture for emerging ad formats that leverage unique data signals to drive user intent.

Why Join This Team?

  • 0 1 Ownership: This isn't about maintaining legacy systems. You are building the foundational supply layer for a brand-new business vertical at Uber.
  • High Visibility: This role directly impacts the "Big Rocks" reviewed by executive leadership.
  • Hybrid Domain Expertise: You will become one of the few engineers at the company who deeply understands both Uber's core marketplace and the complex world of programmatic ad supply.
  • Cross-Pollination: You'll collaborate with experts in MarTech and Ad Delivery, giving you a broad view of how Uber generates revenue.

Basic Qualification

  • Experience: 10+ years of professional software development experience, specializing in large-scale web architecture and distributed backend systems.
  • Full Stack Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in modern web technologies (React, TypeScript, Node.js) and deep experience building embeddable, high-performance web components.
  • Distributed Systems: Proven track record of designing high-throughput, low-latency microservices (Go or Java) capable of supporting global-scale traffic.
  • Core Web Fundamentals: Deep understanding of browser internals, including DOM performance, cross-origin security, and mobile-web optimization.
  • Technical Leadership: Experience leading 0 1 initiatives, setting multi-quarter technical roadmaps, and mentoring senior-level engineering talent.
  • Ad-Tech Knowledge: Familiarity with the supply-side or demand-side Ads ecosystem is needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Performance Engineering: Expertise in optimizing "Time to Interactive" and reducing layout shifts in complex, third-party hosted environments.
  • Privacy-First Design: Understanding of modern web privacy standards and their impact on ad delivery and user experience.
