JOB DESCRIPTION:

Leads the design and development of user-centered web experiences supporting internal and external research initiatives, academic programs, college marketing, and grant-funded projects. This position emphasizes user experience design, collaborative wireframing, accessibility-first development, and WordPress CMS customization.

Works within a multidisciplinary team to translate stakeholder needs into intuitive digital experiences that align with University and College branding standards. Collaborates with developers, designers, faculty, and communications staff to prototype, test, and implement scalable web solutions.

This position is time-limited and soft-funded.

User Experience Design and Front-End Architecture

- Lead user experience planning and interface design for College websites and web
applications.
- Facilitate stakeholder discovery sessions to translate programmatic and research needs into wireframes, user flows, and functional specifications.
- Create collaborative wireframes and prototypes for use by full-stack developers, designers, and project stakeholders.
- Conduct usability evaluations and incorporate feedback into iterative design improvements.
- Ensure all designs meet WCAG AA accessibility standards and follow usability best practices.
- Develop and maintain front-end architecture within WordPress CMS, including creation and maintenance of child themes to support scalable, maintainable, and brand-aligned digital properties.
- Promote accessibility-first and mobile-responsive design practices across projects.

End-User Support and Training

  • Respond to end-user questions related to WordPress CMS usage, accessibility requirements, and content structuring.
  • Provide training and documentation to faculty, program staff, and graduate assistants on best practices for maintaining accessible, user-centered web content.

WordPress Development and CMS Customization

  • Develop customized features within College WordPress properties through child theme development, theme modification, template overrides, and plugin configuration.
  • Collaborate with backend developers and Systems Administrator to ensure optimal server performance, security compliance, and proper database integration.
  • Provide technical guidance to content editors regarding CMS capabilities, content structuring for usability and accessibility, and implementation of reusable content modules.
  • Maintain familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and basic SQL as required to support WordPress customization and performance optimization.

Research and Grant-Supported Digital Development

  • Collaborate with faculty and research centers to design and prototype web and mobile applications supporting data collection, visualization, dissemination, and grant reporting.
  • Translate research workflows into user-centered interfaces that balance usability, security, and compliance with University data-sharing policies.
  • Stay informed on emerging UX technologies and design methodologies to inform research-based digital solutions.
  • Support interdisciplinary project teams by developing scalable interface frameworks that can be reused across multiple grant-funded initiatives.

Analytics, Optimization, and Content Strategy Support

  • Partner with communications and SEO specialists to evaluate site performance using Google Analytics and related tools.
  • Use analytics data, user feedback, and usability testing to inform design improvements and enhance user journeys across College web properties.
  • Support search-engine-optimized content structuring and page architecture that improves visibility while maintaining accessibility compliance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Operations, Director of E-Learning, Technology, and Communications, and the Dean and Senior Associate Dean of the College.

Other Duties as Assigned

May require occasional flexibility to meet project deadlines.

Commensurate to education and experience.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience, or an Associate Degree and four years years of appropriate experience.

PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, web design, user experience design, human-computer interaction, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in WordPress CMS development, including child theme development and customization.
