Customs Specialist Data Analyst
Role summary
This role is for a Customs Specialist Data Analyst responsible for building, maintaining, and improving customs data sets. Key responsibilities include consolidating data from various sources, performing data quality checks, developing reports and dashboards using tools like Excel and Power BI, and designing automation solutions for recurring tasks. The analyst will also collaborate with IT for system improvements, document data flows, and support customs compliance and operations through data analysis and extracts. Additionally, the role involves producing spend analyses, supporting duty drawback processes, and assisting Finance with reconciliations, while also contributing to SOPs and communicating data-related changes.

Main Responsibilities
- Build, maintain and continuously improve customs data sets covering imports, exports, internal transfers and duty-recovery activities (including duties, tariffs, ADD/CVD, MPF, HMF and related charges).
- Consolidate data from brokers’ systems, ACE reports, IFS, freight providers and 3PLs into standardized formats suitable for analysis and audit.
- Perform data mining and data quality checks to identify gaps, inconsistencies, and anomalies in customs-related data (e.g. mis-classified HTS, inconsistent units of measure, missing country codes, missing signatures).
Develop regular and ad-hoc reports/dashboards (e.g. in Excel, Power BI or similar) to Duties and trade remedies paid, Liquidation status and timelines, Duty drawback opportunity pipeline, Storage/hold charges and other customs-related costs.
Automation & Process Improvement
- Design and maintain automation solutions (queries, templates, macros, Power
Query/Power Pivot flows, or similar tools) to streamline recurring customs data tasks (e.g. monthly duty summaries, drawback support files, 7514/7511 support lists).
- Collaborate with IT / IFS support to improve data capture and system configurations that affect customs compliance (e.g. HTS codes, ADD/CVD flags, country codes, Incoterms, units of measure).
- Document data flows, calculation logic and automation routines so that they are transparent, auditable and can be maintained by the wider Customs team.
Support to Customs Compliance & Operations
- Support Yesenia Sauceman and the Customs team in performing entry audits by providing clear data extracts and exception reports highlighting potential errors in valuation, classification, tariff treatment or ADD/CVD exposure.
- Provide data and analysis needed for: Post Summary Corrections (PSCs) and Protests, Duty drawback claims and reconciliations, Responses to CBP and other government requests (e.g. CF28/29, desk reviews, audits)
- Assist in tracking and documenting export evidence (e.g. vessel supply deliveries, CBP Forms 7514, master declarations) in coordination with operational teams and 3PLs. Financial & Duty Recovery Support
- Produce duty and tariff spend analyses to identify trends, high-impact HTS codes, and priority areas for duty-saving initiatives.
- Support duty drawback providers and external advisors by delivering clean, reconciled data that ties import entries to export/offshore consumption events.
- Assist Finance by providing reconciliation files between customs duties, broker
statements, and duty refunds received.
Communication & Governance
- Inform the organization of data-related changes that impact customs reporting, KPIs or external filings.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of SOPs, work instructions and data standards within the Customs department.
- Perform other responsibilities within reasonable limits as assigned by the Customs and Forwarding Manager.
