Senior Back-End Engineer
Role summary
Xero is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer for their Xero Accounting App (XAA) team. This role focuses on high-velocity product delivery for mobile workflows like banking and invoicing, while maintaining system health, scalability, and security. The engineer will contribute to technical design, lead code reviews, and mentor team members. Responsibilities include automating processes, mitigating failures, and leveraging AI for efficiency. We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join the engineering teams behind the Xero Accounting App (XAA), our flagship mobile experience that helps small business owners stay on top of their finances wherever they are. You will contribute to high-velocity product delivery while maintaining a steadfast commitment to system health and engineering excellence, leveraging AI to improve productivity and ship value to our customers, faster.
You’ll seek clarity within technical complexities, making data-driven decisions and major code design choices that solve engineering problems at scale. As a role model for best practices, you will support your team in building high-quality products, ensuring our software is scalable, secure, and maintainable.
You’ll help maintain a high standard for engineering excellence by coaching and mentoring team members. By proactively sharing information and soliciting feedback, you will foster a collaborative environment and a psychologically safe culture where the team can grow together.

We are the engineering teams behind the Xero Accounting mobile app. We thrive in a hybrid, high velocity and cross-functional environment, partnering closely with Product and Design teams to deliver beautiful mobile experiences for customers, faster. We collaborate deeply with web, platform and domain teams to ensure a reliable and seamless experience across all channels.
The team is currently working on
Ship Value: Develop and deliver high impact mobile workflows for key jobs-to-be-done such as banking, invoicing, payments, files within the mobile channel. You will contribute to technical design and lead by example in code reviews, ensuring we ship software that surpasses customer expectations.
Operation Excellence: Uphold our solemn responsibility for availability, accuracy, security, and scalability. You will relentlessly automate manual processes, recognize common patterns of failure to mitigate issues before they reach production, and proactively participate in incident responses and post-mortems.
Efficiency: Get better at our work over time to deliver value more efficiently. You will champion this by simplifying technical complexities and identifying smart ways to automate delivery within the team. You’ll leverage modern practices (including AI) to deliver value to customers faster, ensuring our development processes remain lean and effective.

Here are some of the things we are looking for
You bring extensive experience with .NET, designing and building high-performance RESTful APIs that are scalable, secure, and maintainable, alongside a high degree of openness to learn new technologies.
A proven proficiency in software design patterns, distributed architectures, and cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS, Kubernetes, and CI/CD) with the ability to apply these standards to complex software and delivery processes.
