Role summary
Our client, a DoD/Aerospace contractor, seeks a Tactical Radio Embedded Software Engineer to design and develop embedded hardware and software for mission-critical tactical communications systems. The role requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field with at least 2 years of experience (or Master's with 6 months). Responsibilities include developing software in C/C++, integrating with hardware, debugging, testing, documentation, and ensuring compliance with standards. Experience with low-level drivers, communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C), and unit testing is essential. The position is a 12-24 month contract with potential for direct hire, located in Colorado Springs, CO or Fort Wayne, IN, offering hybrid work options and requiring a DoD Secret clearance.
Our DoD/Aerospace client is looking to fill a
Tactical Radio Embedded Software Engineer
position. In this role, you will design and develop resilient embedded hardware and software solutions supporting mission-critical tactical communications systems for Department of Defense programs. To be considered, you will have a Bachelor’s degree in a related STEM field plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience (or a Master’s degree with at least 6 months of experience).

$60.64/ hour

CLEARANCE:
Ability to obtain a Department of Defense Secret security clearance at time of hire.
In this role you will use your technical and interpersonal skills to:
- Develop and maintain embedded software applications using C and C++
- Collaborate closely with hardware engineers to integrate software and hardware components
- Perform debugging, testing, and optimization of embedded systems
- Participate in peer code reviews and support continuous improvement of software development practices
- Produce and maintain software design documentation, code documentation, and unit tests
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and internal development processes
- Support development of resilient systems for mission-critical communications in contested environments
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering or a related Science, Engineering, Technology, or Mathematics (STEM) field with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
OR
- Master’s degree in a related field with a minimum of 6 months of relevant experience
- Experience working in Agile development environments preferred
Clearance Requirements:
- Ability to obtain a Department of Defense Secret security clearance at time of hire
- Applicants must be eligible for access to classified information and subject to a U.S. Government security investigation
- Due to the nature of work performed, U.S. citizenship is required
What Sets You Apart:
- Strong experience developing software in C and/or C++
- Proven background in low-level driver development
- Experience using unit test frameworks
- Working knowledge of communication protocols such as UART, SPI, and I2C

- Signal processing and digital signal processing (DSP)
- Experience with additional programming languages such as Rust, Python, or MATLAB
- Advanced Linux operating system knowledge, including drivers, networking, and system services
- Multi-threaded and multi-core software development
- Network protocols and socket programming
- Cryptographic techniques and secure boot implementations
- Power management for embedded systems
- Familiarity with Agile development methodologies
- Automated testing and CI/CD pipelines using Git-based workflows
