Role summary

A well-funded, fast-growing diagnostics startup is seeking a Director of Software Engineering for their VitalOne platform. This full-time, onsite role in the Toronto/Mississauga area requires a leader to spearhead instrument control and customer-facing software development. Responsibilities include mentoring a team of 10+ developers, strategic planning, cross-functional collaboration with hardware, product, manufacturing, and regulatory teams, and ensuring adherence to medical device development standards like IEC 62304. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience, including successful product launches in medical diagnostics or robotics, and a proven track record of growing high-performing engineering teams. Experience in cybersecurity, DevOps, and software architecture is also crucial.

Our client, a well-funded, fast-growing diagnostics startup (5+ years in operation), is seeking a Director of Software Engineering.

This is a full-time, permanent role with competitive compensation (salary + benefits + RSUs).

  • Salary: $220k - $250k Canadian Dollars (salary + benefits + RSUs).
  • Location: Toronto / Mississauga Canada area.
  • Onsite position Monday – Friday
  • Local candidates, No relocation. Onsite Interview is required.

As the Director, Software Development, you will be the leader for the Instrument and customer-facing software for our VitalOne platform. Your day-to-day responsibilities will revolve around spearheading the development of instrument control and analysis software. This will involve close collaboration with cross-functional leaders across hardware, product, consumable, manufacturing, regulatory, and quality. You will continuously monitor the dependencies, risks, and technical challenges that arise during the development process. In addition, you will work closely as a part of our leadership team to drive strategic initiatives.

Your role as a leader will be multifaceted, encompassing mentoring your team, technical expertise, cross-functional collaboration, and strategic vision.

Responsibilities:

  • Leadership - strategies for creating high-performing teams, establishing team goals to support business goals, mentoring, hiring, team career planning, performance management, and retention.
  • Communication & Planning – institute efficient practices for communicating and representing software in the planning process amongst Senior Staff, direct reports, cross-functional collaborators, and the leadership team.
  • Guide a team of 10+ of developers, providing hands-on technical leadership and driving development implementation processes and activities.
  • Establish a strategic team structure to allow the business to scale with additional software products, contribute to product innovations, identify and implement tactical continuous improvement, buy versus develop tradeoffs, and technology evaluation.

Experience Needed:

  • Work Experience: 10+ years of experience that includes successful product launches of complex medical diagnostics, devices, or robotics. Bonus points for experience going 0-1 at a startup!
  • Experience growing successful engineering teams with an emphasis on speed, scalability, reliability, and quality.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with a clear understanding of the medical device/diagnostic development life cycle and commercialization process. Bonus points for experience scaling a point-of-care diagnostic platform!

Key software skills:

  • Knowledge of IEC 62304 development process
  • Software verification and test automation
  • Development and management of product requirements
  • Software architecture/design
  • Solutions for robust high availability software
  • Software delivery systems
  • Design and implementation of cyber security solutions
  • Knowledge of hazard analysis, software risk mitigations, Failure Modes Effects Analysis
  • Understanding of Dev Ops solutions
  • Develop and track software budgets

You will be able to:

  • Own the software heartbeat of the platform—instrument control and customer-facing applications that sit at the center of our diagnostic experience.
  • You’ll have the mandate and support to shape architecture, teams, and ways of working as we scale from first launches to a broader product ecosystem.
  • You’ll partner closely with leaders across hardware, consumables, manufacturing, regulatory, and quality, giving you a direct hand in how a regulated medical product is built, shipped, and evolved.
  • As we grow, you’ll build and mentor a high-performing engineering organization, drive strategic technical decisions, and see your work translate into software that clinicians and patients rely on every day.

Compensation will be determined based on the individual’s demonstrated experience, education, training, relevant certifications or licensure, and other applicable business and organizational factors.
