Role summary

The Chief Data Officer (CDO) is an executive role responsible for developing and executing the organization’s data strategy, governance, and analytics initiatives. This position ensures data is managed as a strategic asset to drive business growth, improve decision-making, and enhance operational efficiency. The CDO oversees data governance, data quality, data analytics, and data security, and leads data science, analytics, and data engineering teams. The role requires a strong understanding of data architecture, data platforms, and compliance with data privacy regulations, reporting directly to the CEO, CTO, or CIO.

Position Overview

The Chief Data Officer (CDO) is responsible for developing and executing the organization’s data strategy, governance, and analytics initiatives. This executive role ensures that data is managed as a strategic asset to drive business growth, improve decision-making, and enhance operational efficiency. The CDO oversees data governance, data quality, data analytics, and data security across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the company’s enterprise-wide data strategy.
  • Establish data governance policies, standards, and best practices.
  • Oversee data management, data quality, and data integrity initiatives.
  • Lead data analytics and business intelligence efforts to support decision-making.
  • Collaborate with business leaders to identify data-driven opportunities for growth.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations and security requirements.
  • Oversee data architecture, data platforms, and analytics tools.
  • Build and lead high-performing data science, analytics, and data engineering teams.
  • Promote data-driven culture across the organization.
  • Monitor emerging technologies and trends in data analytics and artificial intelligence.
  • Partner with IT, risk, compliance, and business teams to align data initiatives.
  • Report data strategy progress and performance to executive leadership.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (Master’s or MBA preferred).
  • 12–15+ years of experience in data management, analytics, or technology leadership roles.
  • Strong experience in data governance, analytics, and data architecture.
  • Proven leadership experience managing large data teams and initiatives.
  • Knowledge of data privacy regulations and compliance frameworks.
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
