Role summary

A mid-sized automotive manufacturer specializing in military and other specialty applications, located near Chicago, is seeking a Test Engineer. The role involves performing tests on advanced automotive electrical system components, preparing comprehensive test plans and reports, and maintaining accurate records. Responsibilities include designing tests and experiments according to industry standards, operating specialized test equipment safely, and designing test fixtures. The engineer will collaborate with design, QA, and customers, and must understand Design of Experiments (DOE) and Accelerated Life Testing (HALT). The position also requires preparing for qualification and first article testing, and developing innovative processes to enhance testing capabilities. Interface with third-party labs for specialized testing is also part of the role.

Test Engineer

Midsized automotive manufacturer for military and other specialty applications, located near the Northside of Chicago. We currently have an opening in the Engineering Department for a Test Engineer.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform testing of state-of-the art automotive electrical system components.
  • Prepare Test Plans and Test Reports.
  • Maintain accurate records of test results including test plans and reports.
  • Design tests and experiments including in accordance with industry standards.
  • Operate rotating and high-power test equipment and test items in a safe manner.
  • Design specialized test fixtures and test apparatus.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineering, QA and Customers.
  • Understand Design of Experiments (DOE) and Accelerated Life Testing (HALT).
  • Prepare and conduct formal qualification and first article functional testing.
  • Develop innovative processes to increase testing capability and capacity.
  • Interface with 3rd Party Test labs for any specialized testing not possible in-house.

Required Technical Background and General Skills:

  • Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree.
  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience.
  • Experience in testing applicable to rotating electric machines and power electronics.
  • Familiarity with DAQs and test automation software such as LabView.
  • Adobe and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, decision-making and prioritization skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with military and commercial performance and testing standards.
  • Experience with commercial automotive performance standards.
  • High levels of personal autonomy and motivation.
  • Experience with script programming languages for tests automation.
  • Experience with simulation tools such as PSpice, Matlab, Simulink, etc.

  • $60,000 - $160,000
