The President/CEO is hiring a Chief Operating Officer to run the company day-to-day. This is a true second-in-command role. The CEO will focus on sales leadership, strategic growth, and loan officer recruiting. The COO will own every other functional area of the business (Operations, Capital Markets, Compliance, Technology, HR, Accounting, and Marketing) and be accountable for scaling the platform from roughly 1,000 to 3,000 funded units per month.
The ideal candidate has already taken a mortgage lender through a similar scale-up. They know how to build repeatable, auditable, technology-enabled operations; how to recruit and retain a rapidly growing loan officer base; and how to protect the business with the right compliance, capital markets, and financial infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
*Operational Leadership & Scale*
- Own the end-to-end loan manufacturing process (setup, processing, underwriting, closing, funding, post-close, shipping, and investor delivery) across both brokered and non-delegated correspondent channels.
- Drive turn-time, pull-through, and cost-per-loan improvements by establishing clear KPIs, dashboards, and weekly operating cadences for every department.
- Design and execute a 3x scale plan to support 3,000+ funded units per month and 2,000+ loan officers without linear headcount growth.
*Capital Markets, Secondary & Warehouse*
- Oversee capital markets and secondary marketing, including pricing, lock desk, hedging (where applicable), investor relationships, loan sales, and best-execution analysis on the correspondent side.
- Manage warehouse line relationships, utilization, covenants, and capacity planning to support growth.
- Partner with investors and counterparties; lead negotiations on pricing, terms, and product expansion.
*Technology, Data & Automation*
- Own the technology roadmap, including LendingPad, Loan Vision, pricing engines, POS, CRM, document/verification services, and AI/automation initiatives that reduce manufacturing cost per loan.
- Consolidate and rationalize the tech stack; eliminate redundant vendors and drive measurable ROI on every platform.
- Build the data and reporting infrastructure leadership needs to run the business in near real time.
*Compliance, Risk & Licensing*
- Oversee compliance, legal, QC, and licensing functions to ensure clean state examinations, investor audits, and CFPB/RESPA/TILA/ATR-QM adherence as we expand into new states and products.
- Build a proactive risk framework that supports growth rather than bottlenecks it.
*People, Culture & Talent*
- Partner with HR to scale recruiting, onboarding, performance management, and retention for both operations staff and loan officers.
- Build a high-accountability, high-performance culture with clear expectations, career paths, and leadership development.
- Lead and develop the executive team by hiring A-players into key leadership seats where gaps exist.
*Financial & Strategic Partnership*
- Partner with the Director of Accounting / future CFO on budgeting, forecasting, cash management, branch P&L reporting, and monthly financial reviews.
- Serve as the CEO's primary thought partner on strategy, M&A, new product launches (Non-QM, jumbo, second liens, HELOC, DPA, etc.), and new market entry.
- Represent the company externally with warehouse lenders, investors, regulators, vendors, and industry partners.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
- 15+ years of mortgage banking leadership experience, with at least 5+ years in a COO, President, or senior operations executive role at an IMB, wholesale, or correspondent lender.
- Demonstrated track record of scaling a lender, ideally through or beyond $10B annual production and 2,000+ loan officers.
- Deep hands-on expertise across operations, capital markets/secondary marketing, compliance, and technology, not just general executive leadership.
- Proven ability to build and lead executive teams and to translate CEO vision into operating reality.
- Strong command of the current mortgage tech stack (LOS, POS, PPE, CRM) and fluency in AI/automation applied to mortgage manufacturing.
- Financial acumen, with comfort owning P&L, margin, and unit-economics conversations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in hybrid broker + non-delegated correspondent environments.
- Experience standing up or scaling servicing, retained MSRs, or a consumer-direct channel.
- Prior success taking a family-owned or founder-led company through its next stage of growth without losing its culture.
- Experience with M&A, branch acquisitions, or net-branch structures.
- Active NMLS-registered executive or willingness to register.
What Success Looks Like
- Year 1: Operational leadership team assembled; KPIs, cadences, and reporting installed across every department; monthly close and P&L are clean and timely; tech stack rationalized; measurable turn-time and cost-per-loan improvements.
- Year 2: Funded volume scaling toward 2,000+ units/month; loan officer base growing with strong retention; warehouse capacity and investor base expanded; compliance and licensing footprint clean across every state we operate in.
- Year 3: Platform operating at 3,000+ funded units/month with industry-leading unit economics; EMC positioned as a top-tier independent lender; CEO is fully focused on strategy, sales, and growth, confident that operations runs without him.
