About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Back-End Software Engineer (Experienced or Senior) to join our Model-Based Engineering Software (MBE) team located in Berkeley, Missouri. This role is pivotal in supporting Boeing Defense Services (BDS) and involves leading the development of prototypes and innovative capabilities for web-based applications and services. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing APIs, creating data processing pipelines, optimizing database queries, and building scalable, production-ready infrastructure. This position offers an exciting opportunity to influence the architecture and infrastructure that underpin our prototypes and minimum-viable products, with potential to evolve into a full-stack role encompassing frontend development. The role requires a proactive mindset, technical leadership, and a passion for building reliable, high-performance software systems that support critical defense operations.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, data science, or a related field, along with extensive experience in backend software development. A minimum of 5 years of experience working with Java, Spring, Oracle SQL, SQL Server, and server languages such as Go or Python is required. Security clearance is mandatory, with an active Secret Security Clearance and the ability to obtain Special Program Access. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in database technologies, API development, and modern software development practices, including Agile methodologies. Preferred qualifications include experience with cloud platforms like AWS, containerization tools such as Docker and Kubernetes, and familiarity with modern architectural styles like microservices and event-driven systems. Strong teamwork, communication skills, and the ability to lead projects from conception to deployment are essential for success in this role.
Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture, development, documentation, and maintenance of efficient, standardized processes, tools, and methodologies to streamline the software engineering lifecycle, ensuring continuous integration, delivery, and deployment of safety-critical software.
• Provide technical oversight across systems, guiding teams in designing and operating production-ready applications that meet rigorous standards.
• Evaluate and incorporate emerging technologies to solve complex engineering challenges innovatively.
• Mentor and develop engineering talent across all levels, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.
• Manage projects independently, from initial concept through to deployment, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and technical standards.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to shape application architecture, expanding existing infrastructure for multi-application communication, logging, alerts, authentication, and configuration management.
• Create comprehensive test suites to verify system reliability, performance, and behavior under various conditions.
• Engage with users and developers to define requirements and implement effective solutions that meet operational needs.
• Participate in architectural discussions, influence the product roadmap, and take ownership of key projects and initiatives.
• Resolve complex technical issues, driving innovations that enhance system availability, resilience, and scalability.
• Research and oversee the implementation of current and emerging technologies, tools, frameworks, and regulatory changes relevant to software development.
• Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of large-scale distributed systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards and customer requirements.
• Partner with stakeholders to translate system-level requirements into detailed software specifications, ensuring traceability and alignment with project goals.
• Conduct code reviews to maintain high standards of quality, security, and compliance with coding standards.
