The Opportunity

As the
Director of Design & Engineering
, you will lead and grow an in‑house multidisciplinary team of ~20 engineers, designers, PMs, coordinators, and technical specialists. You’ll oversee all design deliverables for telecommunications and emerging utility infrastructure projects—while shaping the division’s structure, processes, culture, and long-term strategy.

This is an entrepreneurial leadership role for someone who wants ownership, influence, and the chance to scale a high-performing department within a rapidly evolving industry.

What You’ll Lead

🚀 Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and elevate a team of designers, PMs, and technical staff.
  • Build the division by forecasting staffing needs, hiring top talent, and optimizing workflows.
  • Create a collaborative, inclusive, high-performance culture.

📐 Technical & Design Oversight

  • Provide expert direction across telecom design, planning, permitting, and engineering standards.
  • Ensure compliance with major Canadian carrier requirements.
  • Oversee expanding utility design initiatives.
  • Support QA, drawing accuracy, and technical excellence.
  • Conduct site visits to validate designs and support client discussions.

📊 Business & Financial Ownership

  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and revenue management for the division.
  • Support PMs in developing strong financial management skills.
  • Review and approve budgets, scopes, change orders, and resource plans.
  • Drive profit margin integrity and operational efficiency.

📈 Strategic Growth & Client Engagement

  • Partner with executive leadership on long-term growth strategy.
  • Strengthen and expand client relationships across the sector.
  • Support business development efforts and identify new opportunities.
  • Potential for BD-related compensation tied to growth wins.

What You Bring

  • 8+ years’ progressive experience in telecom design, utilities design, civil/electrical engineering, or related fields.
  • Strong knowledge of telecom planning and standards across Ontario.
  • Background in civil or electrical engineering (preferred).
  • Proven success leading multidisciplinary technical teams.
  • Experience building or restructuring departments is a major asset.
  • Strong financial acumen and commercial awareness.
  • Independent, proactive, entrepreneurial leadership style.
  • Excellent communication skills and client-facing polish.
