Role summary

A hybrid Software Engineering Manager role based in Calgary, leading core platform teams responsible for backend systems and merchant risk. This position requires a blend of technical leadership, delivery execution, and people management. Responsibilities include driving technical direction, overseeing design and implementation, championing best practices in CI/CD, observability, and testing, managing operational health, and translating business goals into technical plans. We’re looking for a
Manager, Software Engineering
to lead our core platform teams. You will manage a team of 5-8 talented software engineers and partner closely with a dedicated product manager to build, scale, and refine critical components of our backend systems. This role balances technical leadership, delivery execution, and people management.

As the Engineering Manager for Merchant Risk, you will lead the team responsible for the integrity of our PayFac solution. You’ll oversee the development of high-throughput systems that differentiate legitimate growth from sophisticated bad actors in real-time. This isn't just about security—it's about building the trust-layer that allows our global economy to scale safely.

The Role: What You’ll Own 🔑

Technical Leadership & Execution

  • Drive technical direction and decision-making with support from senior engineers.
  • Oversee design reviews, implementation plans, and ensure technical alignment across projects and other engineering teams.
  • Champion best practices in CI/CD, observability, automated testing, and system archit
  • Ensure that all code is robust, testable, and scalable.
  • Manage the operational health of your systems, including SLAs, incident response, and on-call improvements.

Roadmap Ownership

  • Translate business and product goals into clear technical plans and execution milestones
  • Balance feature delivery with platform investments and technical debt management
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, DevOps, and security teams to drive alignment and ensure delivery success.

Quality, Performance & Security

  • Promote a culture of engineering excellence and secure development
  • Continuously improve system performance and address technical vulnerabilities proactively.
