About Inner Balance
Inner Balance is a women’s health company building technology-enabled solutions to improve access, experience, and outcomes in hormone health. We combine digital infrastructure, product innovation, and data-driven decision-making to create a better experience for women.
We are looking for a deeply technical leader who can drive software development, improve platform reliability, and lead the engineering organization as we continue to scale.
Position Overview
Inner Balance is seeking a Vice President of Engineering
to lead the design, development, maintenance, and optimization of our technology platform. This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an experienced
software engineer and engineering manager
who can both lead teams and stay close to the code.
The VP of Engineering will oversee the full development lifecycle across our digital platform, manage the engineering team, and ensure the stability, performance, and scalability of our systems. This person will also be responsible for establishing strong monitoring, alerting, and issue-response systems so that website bugs, outages, broken user flows, and performance issues are quickly identified and resolved.
In addition to leading engineering execution, the VP of Engineering will collaborate closely with Product, Business Intelligence, and Marketing teams to review key performance metrics and help diagnose changes in site performance. When anomalies occur—such as a drop in traffic, engagement, or conversion—this leader will help determine whether the root cause is technical (e.g., a bug, broken flow, tracking issue, or infrastructure problem) or driven by other factors such as traffic quality or marketing changes.
The ideal candidate is a strong developer, systems thinker, and engineering leader who can manage people, improve processes, and build reliable technology in a fast-moving environment.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership
- Lead and manage the software development team across planning, execution, delivery, and ongoing maintenance.
- Hire, mentor, and develop engineers while building a high-performing engineering culture.
- Set technical direction and development standards in partnership with the CTO.
- Oversee engineering resourcing, prioritization, and execution across multiple projects.
Hands-On Technical Oversight
- Remain close to the codebase and system architecture, with the ability to contribute technically when needed.
- Review code, guide technical decisions, and ensure engineering best practices are followed.
- Drive improvements in code quality, development speed, testing, and deployment processes.
- Ensure systems are scalable, secure, stable, and maintainable.
Site Reliability, Monitoring & Issue Detection
- Build and oversee systems for monitoring website health, platform performance, uptime, and user flow issues.
- Establish alerting and escalation processes to identify bugs, broken pages, checkout failures, API errors, latency issues, and other technical problems.
- Implement a proactive approach to incident detection, root-cause analysis, and resolution.
- Ensure the engineering team has visibility into critical application and infrastructure metrics.
Technical Diagnosis & Data Collaboration
- Partner with Product, Business Intelligence, and Marketing teams to monitor and review key business and platform metrics.
- Help synthesize insights from product analytics, marketing performance data, and BI dashboards to understand changes in site performance.
- When performance shifts occur (e.g., drops in traffic, engagement, or conversion), lead technical investigations to determine whether the cause is related to:
- website or platform bugs
- broken user journeys
- tracking or analytics implementation issues
- infrastructure or performance problems
- deployment errors
- traffic quality or marketing changes
- Coordinate cross-functional investigations and ensure technical issues are quickly identified and resolved.
Development Process & Execution
- Improve engineering workflows, sprint execution, release management, QA processes, and documentation.
- Ensure development priorities align with product roadmap and business objectives.
- Establish strong collaboration between engineering and other teams across the organization.
- Reduce technical debt while balancing speed, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
Platform Improvement & Innovation
- Identify opportunities to improve platform performance, reliability, automation, and scalability.
- Evaluate and implement tools that improve monitoring, debugging, observability, and development productivity.
- Support experimentation and rapid iteration while maintaining system stability.
Qualifications
Required
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience as a hands-on developer.
- 4+ years of engineering leadership or team management experience.
- Strong background in web application development, architecture, and systems troubleshooting.
- Experience managing developers and delivering complex technical projects.
- Strong understanding of monitoring, logging, debugging, testing, and release processes.
- Ability to analyze and investigate technical causes of business performance changes.
- Experience collaborating cross-functionally with Product, BI, Marketing, and other business stakeholders.
Preferred
- Experience with ecommerce or consumer-facing digital platforms.
- Experience in startup or high-growth environments.
- Familiarity with product analytics, funnel metrics, and site performance dashboards.
- Experience building monitoring, alerting, and incident response systems.
- Experience in health tech, digital health, or regulated consumer platforms is a plus.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Is an engineer and a leader
- Can code, review code, and guide architecture decisions
- Knows how to build stable, observable, and scalable systems
- *Is comfortable interpreting product and marketing data when diagnosing platform issues*
- *Can quickly coordinate cross-team investigations when performance metrics change*
- *Works effectively across both technical and business teams*
- Thrives in fast-moving, high-accountability environments
