Role summary

KeystoneREN is seeking a mission-focused Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to shape the company's technology roadmap and drive innovation. Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the CTO will align technology strategies with business goals, focusing on technology strategy, innovation, cybersecurity, and governance. Responsibilities include leading the technology team, managing IT budgets, overseeing technical architecture, ensuring scalability and reliability, and managing the Network Operations Center (NOC). The CTO will also drive product development, identify R&D opportunities, foster creativity, and develop go-to-market strategies. Additionally, the role involves building strategic partnerships with clients, vendors, and the research community, and providing technology leadership on collaborative projects. This is a full-time, primarily remote position with occasional travel.

KeystoneREN seeks a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic, collaborative, technically skilled individual capable of shaping a company's technology roadmap and driving innovation. The CTO will work closely with KeystoneREN’s Executive Director (ED) and Chief Relationship Officer (CRO) on all technological aspects of KeystoneREN aligning technology strategies with business goals in support of the organization’s mission, vision, and guiding principles.

Reporting to the ED, the CTO will support technical, strategic, and leadership activities including, but not limited to, the following responsibilities:

Technology Strategy and Innovation:

• Work with the ED, CRO, and technical staff to define and execute the company's technological vision. Specific activities include staying abreast of technology trends or emerging cyberinfrastructure technologies specifically as they pertain to regional and national research and education networking and its associated community.

• Assess relevance of new, emerging, and existing technologies to KeystoneREN and recommend innovative solutions that provide a competitive edge.

• Provide technical guidance on KeystoneREN cybersecurity and governance, risk, management (GRM) strategies and work with executive leadership team on security products and services portfolio. • Provide thought leadership and subject matter expertise in a highly visible role representing KeystoneREN across diverse stakeholders at community events.

Team Leadership and Management:

• This position is responsible for leading and managing the technology team including guidance, mentorship, resources and time management support to ensure efficient and effective project execution.

• Lead KeystoneREN’s technical architecture and infrastructure activities, ensuring scalability, security, and reliability.

• Daily oversight and escalation for KeystoneREN Network Operations Center (NOC) providing 24x7x265 support to clients and partners.

• Work with ED and technology team to effectively manage the IT budget efficiently allocating resources to support strategic initiatives while maintaining financial discipline.

Product Development and Innovation:

• Work with others in KeystoneREN and the community, where appropriate, on the development of technology products and services, ensuring they are aligned with business goals.

• Oversee the entire technology product or service lifecycle.

• Identify research and development opportunities, including experimenting with new technologies, working with external collaborators, and fostering a culture of creativity and exploration within KeystoneREN and the Pennsylvania research and education community.

• Perform cost-benefit analysis, ROI analysis, and develop go-to-market strategies to achieve business goals.

Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations

• Represent KeystoneREN externally and foster collaborations among clients and regional/national/international partners.

• Identify and develop strategic partnerships with the Pennsylvania, regional, and national research and education community.

• Identify and collaborate with technology vendors and other industry leaders.

• Provide technology leadership and oversight on multi-site collaborative federal grant projects and other externally funded initiatives.

Other duties as assigned. Working Conditions

The position is full-time with regular hours Monday – Friday. Working condition is primarily remote with occasional travel to in-person meetings and client sites. Candidate must have the ability to lift and carry 40 pounds and the ability to stay at a terminal and use a keyboard and mouse for extended periods. The candidate must have the ability to travel to a variety of sites. Periodic weekend or evening work is expected. Candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S
