Role summary

This Automation Engineer role focuses on designing, developing, and improving automated manufacturing processes to enhance safety, quality, and productivity. The engineer will analyze product requirements, implement robotics and vision systems, ensure error-proofing, and maintain regulatory compliance. Key responsibilities include creating CAD designs, training personnel, and staying updated on industry trends. The role requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, experience with manufacturing methods and quality systems, and the ability to manage complexity and lead small teams. Preferred skills include hands-on robotics/vision experience, control systems integration, Python proficiency, advanced CAD skills, and experience with concept-to-commissioning projects.

Position Summary

You will lead the design, development, and continuous improvement of automated manufacturing processes that prioritize safety, quality, and productivity. Using creativity and technical expertise, you'll transform product requirements into robust, automated solutions—reducing human exposure to hazards, eliminating quality risks, and driving measurable efficiency gains.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and refine automated manufacturing processes by analyzing product requirements, researching best practices, and collaborating with equipment vendors and cross-functional teams.
  • Champion operator safety by building safeguards, ergonomic solutions, and automation strategies that minimize human interaction with hazardous operations.
  • Ensure product and process quality through poka‑yoke (error‑proofing) design, development of testing methods, capability studies, and establishment of standards and validation procedures.
  • Increase throughput and reduce manual intervention by automating processes—implementing robotics, vision systems, and control integrations that deliver reliable, repeatable results.
  • Develop, program, test, and deploy vision and robotic solutions to elevate safety, boost quality, and accelerate productivity.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance and protect company reputation by designing processes that meet applicable government and industry standards.
  • Partner with maintenance to implement preventative maintenance programs for new equipment, following vendor guidance and escalating service needs when necessary.
  • Create and maintain CAD-based design records for tooling and fixtures; ensure accurate documentation and version control.
  • Lead successful process rollouts by training technicians and local engineers until competence and confidence are established.
  • Stay current with industry trends and technical skills through workshops, publications, and professional networks; contribute to a culture of continuous learning.
  • Support the team by sharing expertise and stepping in to help when capacity or technical challenges arise.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an equivalent manufacturing-related engineering discipline required; Master's degree is a plus.
  • Strong ability to manage complexity, inform stakeholders, lead or supervise small teams, and present technical information clearly.
  • Demonstrated experience with manufacturing methods, quality systems, and process development.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Hands‑on experience with robotics and computer/machine vision solutions.
  • Experience integrating control systems (MES integration is a plus).
  • Proficiency in Python or other programming languages for automation scripting and tooling.
  • Advanced skills in 3D CAD software and tooling/fixture design.
  • Practical experience bringing automated systems from concept through commissioning on the shop floor.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to work in extreme heat and cold. Ability to work in a loud environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand/ be on your feet for long periods of time and walk throughout the shop floor. Ability to sit at a desk. Ability to use hands/ fingers. Ability to reach with arms. Ability to operate power and handheld tools.
