Role summary

MSA Safety is seeking a passionate and driven Test Engineer to join their team. This role involves designing test systems, including software code and mechanical design, and resolving production issues related to PC-based test equipment. The Test Engineer will participate in cross-functional teams for continuous improvement and new product development, manage project justifications for capital funding, and procure necessary components. Key responsibilities include creating and reviewing electrical schematics, interpreting engineering specifications, developing and executing test plans, and utilizing statistical analysis for measurement system evaluations. Experience with analog and digital circuit board design, mechanical design, and automation is also required.

Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Design Test systems; including writing and/or modifying software code and mechanical test system design
  • Investigate, evaluate, and resolve production issues stemming from manual or automated PC-based test equipment, including hardware and software designs.
  • Participate on cross-functional, continuous improvement and NPD teams to identify test system needs, drive product testing designs, and manage build and production launch of new systems.
  • Write and submit project justifications to acquire capital funding to support and manage these projects.
  • Identify and procure components, including PCBAs, to support proactive and reactive tasks relative to production test systems.

Qualifications
Special knowledge, skills and abilities required:

  • Ability to create and review electrical schematics, procedures, and specifications to troubleshoot systems.
  • Ability to interpret engineering specifications, agency requirements, and industry standards.
  • Ability to develop and execute test plans to verify production equipment prior to release.
  • Awareness of measurement system evaluations (MSE) using statistical analysis, tools, and software such as Minitab.
  • Knowledge of analog and digital circuit board design and layout.
  • Mechanical design, assembly and/or automation experience.
  • Demonstrated sense of urgency when responding to customer support requests.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to provide timely technical updates to production operators, technicians, engineers, and managers.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently in an assembly environment.

Special knowledge, skills and abilities preferred:

  • Experience with NI LabVIEW, NI TestSTAND, NI CVI, and Python.
  • Experience with Altium, Solid Works, Microsoft SQL
  • Experience in an electronic test engineering environment
  • RoHS soldering and manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with designing and developing test equipment.
  • Experience with gas supply and detection systems

Education and experience required:

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline, preferably from an ABET accredited program.
  • This position is available at at the following career level(s) depending on experience, education, etc.:
  • Level one (Staff I Engineer): no experience required
  • Level two (Staff II Engineer): 2 years relevant experience
  • Level three (Staff III Engineer): 4 years relevant experience
  • MS degree may be substituted for up to 2 years of experience

Education and experience preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Electro-Mechanical Engineering or relevant Engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • PE certification.
  • Experience in an electronic test engineering environment.
  • RoHS soldering and manufacturing experience.
  • LabVIEW visual programming language experience.
  • C programming language experience.
  • Experience with designing and developing equipment with motion control.
