
Director of Security
Role summary
The Director of Security oversees the daily operations of the Front Gate, Welcome Center, and Community Patrol to ensure the safety and security of the Ocean Reef Community. This role involves supervising personnel, collaborating with law enforcement agencies, enforcing policies, and maintaining a high level of customer service. The Director is responsible for managing access control, responding to incidents, maintaining records, and ensuring a safe work environment. A minimum of six years of security experience, with two years in a supervisory capacity, is required, along with specific Florida security licenses and the ability to handle firearms.
The Director of Security ensures that day-to-day operations of the Front Gate, Welcome Center, and Community Patrol run effectively and efficiently for the safety and security of the Ocean Reef Community. The Front Gate is the first layer of security encountered by residents, members, guests, and other visitors. The Welcome Center staff process people seeking access to the Ocean Reef Community by conducting queries on multiple open-source databases and providing access cards to qualifying individuals. The Community Patrol Officers patrol the community and respond to calls for service. The Director of Security ensures safety and security are maintained at their highest level, while maintaining customer service and hospitable approach in all areas.
SPECIFIC DUTIES (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO)
- Supervises the activities of personnel under his/her command.
- Works closely with other members of the Public Safety Department, including Special Operations and Fire Rescue Division personnel.
- Collaborates with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies assigned to Ocean Reef.
- May be called to assist the Sheriff’s Department as a liaison always yielding to the Sheriff’s Office and allowing the Sheriff’s Department to take the lead in every law enforcement action.
- Has access to an ORCA issued firearm to be used in the event of an emergency.
- May be called to coordinate or perform special detail armed assignments.
- Responds to incidents involving armed individuals and acts according to Policy.
- Utilizes only the amount of force necessary to overcome resistance or gain compliance from any subject being lawfully detained or prevented from harming others during the commission of a crime.
- Provides quality service by demonstrating professionalism and delivering excellent customer service.
- Keeps and maintains a log of daily, monthly, and yearly statistics.
- Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Reports any maintenance issues with equipment.
- Implements and enforces all policies and procedures.
- Communicates important information to leadership.
- Monitors personnel productivity and provides constructive feedback.
- Organizes workflow by scheduling personnel, assigning tasks, and ensuring employees understand their duties.
- Sets goals and deadlines and appraises good job performance.
- Coaches, counsels, and disciplines employees as needed.
- Maintains a safe and healthy work environment.
- May be assigned additional duties as deemed necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong organizational and communication skills (written and oral).
- Ability to interpret and enforce policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of public safety access control components with emphasis on security.
- Knowledge of State of Florida criminal justice laws, procedures, and processes.
- Knowledge of incident command system structures.
- Knowledge of computer software systems and word processing.
- Ability to recognize specific colors, designs and logos.
- Frequently required to stand and talk or listen.
- Required to walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, ID cards, gate controls, and reach with hands and arms.
- Specific vision abilities, including close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required. A minimum of a bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of certifications and/or continuing education, is required.
Experience
Minimum of six (6) years of security, public safety, or related experience, two (2) of which should be in a supervisory/managerial capacity. Prior Certified Law Enforcement experience is preferred but not necessary.
Licenses, Certificates, or Other:
- Valid Florida Driver License.
- Florida Security Class D and Florida Security Class G Licenses (or ability to obtain within six (6) months).
- Must pass Firearms qualification course as mandated by the State.
- Must successfully pass a psychological examination by a licensed professional approved by ORCA.
- Must complete a minimum of 4 hours of training annually (or the minimum required by Florida Statutes) by a Class K licensee, as well as any additional training as required by ORCA.
- Must qualify with firearm annually by meeting or exceeding the minimum firearms proficiency standards on an approved range with a certified Range Master.
- Will be required to attend at least 3 sessions with a mental health professional if involved in a shooting incident.
- Additional visits may be required if recommended by the mental health professional.
- Bilingual preferred – English and Spanish.
Any combination of the above education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties for the position will be considered.
