Vice President of SDET
Role summary
Pennymac is seeking a Vice President of SDET to drive strategic quality standards for a major vertical or critical technology domain. This role involves defining and executing the quality roadmap, architecture, and thought-leadership. The VP will provide technical leadership to engineering and SDET teams, define test automation strategy, and partner with senior IT, product, and engineering leaders. Responsibilities include managing quality risks, spearheading AI-assisted testing technologies, overseeing API and performance testing, championing CI/CD practices, establishing quality metrics, and mentoring teams. The ideal candidate has 8+ years of experience in software development and test automation, leading teams, expert programming skills in modern Javascript/Typescript/Node.js, proficiency in Java/Python, advanced framework architecture experience, expertise in microservices and API testing tools, hands-on experience with AI-augmented testing platforms, and deep understanding of system observability.

A Typical Day:
The Vice President of SDET will drive strategic quality standards for a major vertical or critical technology domain within Pennymac (e.g., Trading Systems, Servicing Platform, Data & Analytics, etc.). They are responsible for their specific area's quality roadmap, architecture, and thought-leadership.
The VP, SDET will:
- Provide technical leadership across engineering and SDET teams to ensure the delivery of exceptional technical solutions.
- Define and drive the overall test automation strategy and quality vision across multiple engineering teams.
- Partner directly with senior IT groups, product managers, and engineering leadership in an advisory role to ensure testing strategies align with business requirements and system architecture.
- Orchestrate the management of technology scope and risks related to quality and software delivery.
- Spearhead the adoption of advanced testing technologies, evaluating and standardizing the use of AI-assisted IDEs and AI-augmented test automation platforms across the QA organization.
- Oversee and design complex automated API test suites and comprehensive performance, load, and stress testing strategies.
- Champion CI/CD practices, driving the strategy for integrating automated test suites into continuous integration and deployment pipelines to ensure seamless releases.
- Establish and monitor key quality metrics, reporting on test coverage, defect leakage, and overall product health to stakeholders.
- Mentor on approach and execution of solutions, coach on technologies, and establish a team-wide comprehension of QA capabilities and direction.
- Continuously evaluate the software development lifecycle to recommend and implement process improvements based on industry trends.
- Demonstrate behaviors which are aligned with the organization’s desired culture and values.
What You’ll Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, MS a plus.
- 7+ years of experience working with IT leadership to create technical strategies.
- 8+ years of experience in software development and test automation, including experience leading and inspiring software development teams.
- Deep understanding and expert-level programming skills in modern Javascript, Typescript, and Node.js, alongside strong proficiency in languages like Java or Python.
- Advanced experience architecting and maintaining enterprise-grade frameworks from the ground up using modern automation tools such as Playwright or Cypress.
- Experience in a microservice-oriented environment and deep expertise with API testing tools and frameworks like Postman, Katalon, or REST Assured.
- Proven track record of utilizing AI-assisted IDEs (e.g., Cursor, GitHub Copilot) and hands-on experience implementing AI-augmented test automation platforms (e.g., Applitools, KaneAI).
- Solid understanding of the practical application of agile development methods and leading teams in an Agile/Lean environment.
- Deep understanding of system observability, with extensive experience configuring and extracting insights from logging tools like Datadog, New Relic, Splunk, or Dynatrace.

Compensation: Individual salary may vary based on multiple factors including specific role, geographic location / market data, and skills and experience as defined below:
- Lower in range - Building skills and experience in the role
- Mid-range - Experience and skills align with proficiency in the role
- Higher in range - Experience and skills add value above typical requirements of the role
Some roles may be eligible for performance-based compensation and/or stock-based incentives awarded to employees based on company and individual performance.
Salary: $110,000 - $170,000 Work Model: OFFICE
