Role summary

SEL is seeking an AI Engineer to design, implement, and improve AI-assisted engineering tools and workflows. This role involves preparing and maintaining integrations with development systems, AI agents, and coding assistants, as well as creating reusable AI enablement patterns like prompt templates and agent configurations. The AI Engineer will also coach and mentor engineering teams on AI-assisted development practices through hands-on pairing and training. Key responsibilities include integrating AI into product development lifecycles and defining/reporting AI enablement metrics. The position requires a B.S. in a relevant field and typically 2+ years of experience in software development, backend/infrastructure, or AI-assisted development tools.

As an AI Engineer a typical day might include the following:

  • Participate in the design, implementation, and improvement of AI-assisted engineering tools and workflows that integrate with SEL development systems.
  • Prepare and maintain integrations that connect AI agents and coding assistants to engineering infrastructure, including continuous integration (CI), documentation, issue tracking, and code review systems
  • Prepare and maintain reusable AI enablement patterns, including prompt engineering templates, agent configurations, review heuristics, and safe-usage guidelines.
  • Participate in coaching and mentoring engagements with engineering teams on AI-assisted development practices through hands-on pairing, workshops, and structured training.
  • Prepare and maintain AI-assisted workflow integrations in product development lifecycles, including specification, test generation, CI evidence gathering, and reporting standards.
  • Participate in the definition, collection, and reporting of AI enablement metrics aligned with organizational outcomes.
  • Mentor Associate Engineers and Technicians.

This job might be for you if you have:

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent
  • Typically 2+ years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • - Software or firmware development including:
  • - Systems programming (C, C++, Python, or similar)
  • - Backend, infrastructure, or developer tooling
  • - AI-assisted development tools and workflows
  • - Software development lifecycle (SDLC) tooling and automation
  • Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants or agentic development tools as a regular development practice
  • Ability to work across team boundaries and communicate precise technical intent
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment

It would be nice if you had:

  • Experience building developer tooling, integrations, or platform infrastructure
  • Experience with firmware or embedded systems development
  • Familiarity with agentic AI frameworks, model context protocols, or tool-augmented language model architectures
  • Experience with CI/CD systems and automated test infrastructure
  • Knowledge of AI evaluation methodologies (benchmarking, regression measurement, scenario-based scoring)
  • Experience with secure development practices or standards (IEC 62443, NERC/CIP, FIPS, or similar)
  • Knowledge of SEL products and solutions

Pay Range Data

We anticipate filling this position as an AI Engineer $97,740 - $144,460 per year. We are open to reviewing additional candidates with more or less experience and the pay range may differ if filled at a different level. Our pay ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location. We base our starting pay offer and title on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills
