About The Role
The Senior Lead AI Engineer role at Capital One offers an exciting opportunity to lead the development and deployment of advanced artificial intelligence systems that directly impact banking products and customer interactions. As a key member of the Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team, you will collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams comprising engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers to deliver innovative AI-powered solutions. Your responsibilities will include designing, developing, testing, and supporting AI software components such as foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, and model governance. You will utilize a broad stack of open-source and SaaS AI technologies, including AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, and PyTorch, to build scalable, responsible, and high-performance AI systems. Additionally, you will contribute to defining the technical vision and long-term roadmap for foundational AI systems at Capital One, ensuring alignment with strategic business goals. The role requires a deep understanding of AI research, engineering excellence, and the ability to innovate continuously to improve system performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields plus at least 6 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies
- Master's degree in relevant fields plus at least 4 years of experience in AI/ML development
- Minimum of 6 years programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, or Java
- Proven experience deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure
- Strong understanding of AI model training, inference, optimization, and governance
- Experience designing and supporting complex AI systems, including large language models and vector databases
- Demonstrated leadership in mentoring engineering teams and influencing cross-functional stakeholders
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Deep technical expertise in hardware, software, and AI optimization techniques
Responsibilities
- Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered products that enhance operational efficiency and customer engagement
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components, including foundation models, large language models, and similarity search systems
- Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as Huggingface, AWS Ultraclusters, VectorDBs, and Nemo Guardrails
- Implement state-of-the-art optimization techniques to improve the scalability, cost, latency, and throughput of AI systems

- Ensure AI models and systems adhere to governance, observability, and ethical standards
- Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with research teams to incorporate the latest scientific advancements into production systems
