About The Role
Join Affirm as a Software Engineer II, Backend (Identity Decisioning), and become a vital part of our identity engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining high-availability, low-latency systems that support onboarding, authentication, and verification processes across our product ecosystem. Your work will directly influence the security, reliability, and efficiency of our user identity management systems, ensuring a smooth experience for millions of consumers. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product management, design, and analytics, to deliver scalable solutions that meet business needs. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a mid-senior level engineer to grow their expertise in distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and backend development within a dynamic, innovative environment.
Qualifications

  • 1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer
  • Proficiency in Python or Kotlin for backend development
  • Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems
  • Familiarity with distributed systems and building blocks such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to translate business scenarios into technical solutions
  • Experience navigating large codebases, debugging, and conducting code reviews
  • Ownership mindset with proactive feedback seeking and personal growth focus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration
  • Relevant practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with team leads and managers to break down projects into manageable tasks and deliver in phases
  • Support product development by working with product management, design, and analytics teams
  • Participate in ideation sessions, articulate technical constraints, and assist in decision-making processes
  • Ensure operational stability and availability of identity systems through monitoring, metrics creation, and escalation when necessary
  • Contribute to team growth by engaging in development activities, including participation in the interview process
  • Support on-call duties and “keep the lights on” efforts to maintain system reliability
  • Write clear, well-tested, and extensible code that interacts seamlessly with multiple software components
  • Navigate and debug complex codebases, providing constructive feedback during code reviews
