About The Role
The Principal Software Engineer - Back End is a senior technical leadership role responsible for guiding the development and implementation of backend systems within the Federal Civilian business unit. This position involves serving as a subject matter expert, providing mentorship to engineering teams, and influencing strategic technical initiatives. The role requires a combination of technical excellence, strategic vision, and excellent communication skills to shape future work streams, support new business opportunities, and ensure the delivery of high-quality software solutions. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with large-scale systems, a deep understanding of government and market conditions, and a passion for innovation. This is a remote position, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere while contributing to mission-critical projects that impact public services at a national level.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or relevant experience)
- 10+ years of engineering experience, including leadership of large systems and teams
- Deep expertise in backend software development and architecture
- Strong understanding of government technology environments and market conditions
- Experience with modern development practices, cloud platforms, and scalable infrastructure
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Demonstrated ability to mentor, guide, and coach engineering teams
- Proven track record of supporting new business development and organic growth
- Experience with bid-writing, technical demos, and client-facing presentations is a plus
Responsibilities
- Provide organizational oversight and promote best practices in software engineering across teams
- Serve as a technical leader and subject matter expert to support strategic initiatives and growth opportunities
- Mentor and coach engineering staff to foster technical excellence and leadership capabilities
- Define and deliver minimal viable products independently or with new teams, often in ambiguous environments
- Communicate development strategies, system designs, and project histories effectively to internal and external stakeholders
- Maintain active engagement with major technical ecosystems through community participation or project maintenance
- Support hiring, onboarding, and professional development activities within the engineering teams
- Represent the company in public forums such as conferences, blogs, and panel discussions
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support data analytics and other strategic initiatives within the business unit
- Stay informed on industry trends and incorporate innovative practices into organizational workflows
- Contribute to organizational improvements by understanding market conditions and driving technological innovation
