About The Role
The Senior Data Scientist at HNI Corporation is a strategic and technical leader within the Decision Science team. This role involves solving complex, cross-functional business challenges by leveraging advanced analytics, machine learning, and statistical modeling techniques. The Senior Data Scientist is responsible for end-to-end ownership of data science initiatives, from problem framing and data strategy to deploying models in production and monitoring their performance. As a key contributor, this individual will help shape data science standards, mentor junior team members, and collaborate closely with business and IT leaders to ensure scalable, reliable, and impactful solutions. The position offers an opportunity to influence strategic decision-making through innovative analytics and advanced data-driven insights.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of progressive experience in advanced analytics, data science, or machine learning roles
- Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline
- Proven success in delivering end-to-end data science solutions in a production environment
- Deep hands-on expertise with SQL and Python
- Strong experience working in cloud-based environments (Azure preferred; AWS/GCP acceptable)
- Solid understanding of Linux-based systems and distributed computing environments
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
- Strong communication, consulting, and stakeholder engagement capabilities
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of advanced predictive, prescriptive, and machine learning models to support enterprise decision-making
- Apply advanced statistical techniques, feature engineering, and algorithm selection to complex, multi-source datasets
- Utilize SQL, Python, and related tools to analyze large-scale internal and external data sources
- Identify patterns, trends, and drivers of business performance across manufacturing, supply chain, sales, and operations
- Own data science solutions from initial concept through production deployment and ongoing optimization
- Define modeling approaches, validation strategies, and performance metrics to ensure business value and technical rigor
- Monitor deployed models for performance, drift, and stability; recommend enhancements or retraining strategies
- Partner with data engineering and IT teams to ensure models are production-ready and operationally supported
- Translate complex analytical concepts into clear, actionable insights for business leaders and non-technical stakeholders
- Act as a trusted analytics advisor, influencing decision-making through data-driven recommendations
- Establish and promote best practices for model development, documentation, testing, and deployment
- Mentor and guide junior and mid-level data scientists, fostering technical growth and knowledge sharing
- Collaborate on data collection strategies, analytics pipelines, and feature stores to enhance modeling effectiveness
