Role summary
Watershed Analytics seeks an experienced Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead an AI transformation of its established media intelligence business. Reporting to the CEO, the CTO will define and execute the technology strategy and roadmap, focusing on AI and machine learning solutions for Fortune 500 clients. This builder role requires architecting and delivering production systems, modernizing the technology stack, and bringing complex data products to market. The ideal candidate has 12+ years of experience, a strong background in AI/ML, data science, NLP, modern software architectures, and cloud-native systems. Experience in media analytics and business development is preferred. The position offers competitive salary, equity, and remote work.

Responsibilities
You will own the technology strategy and build the systems for Watershed's next generation of products — novel AI solutions for our agenda-setting Fortune 10 and Fortune 500 clients.
*Strategic & Technical Leadership*
- Define and execute Watershed’s technology roadmap, aligning platform capabilities with business strategy and client needs.
- Evaluate, select, and integrate emerging technologies — particularly in AI and machine learning — that balance speed and reliability to maintain competitive advantage.
- Bring complex data products from early development to market, establishing new revenue streams and service offerings.
- Drive the modernization of Watershed’s technology stack, including cloud-native systems, modern software architectures, and scalable infrastructure.
*Software and Systems Development*
- Architect and deliver production systems; this is a builder role, not just a strategy seat.
- Design and implement data pipelines, analytics platforms, and productized data services, incorporating agent-orchestrated workflows, LLM integrations, NLP pipelines and other emerging tech.
- Establish engineering standards, development processes, and technical documentation.
*Partnerships & Growth*
- Contribute to business development. Be comfortable in strategic sales conversations with senior communications executives.
- Identify technology partnership opportunities that expand Watershed’s capabilities and market reach.
- Support business development with thought leadership that advances Watershed’s position in the market.
- Play a central role in shaping company strategy, culture, operations, hiring, and professional development.
Qualifications
- 12+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Demonstrated ability to write production-quality code and build real systems, not just manage them.
- Strong background spanning artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and natural language processing.
- Strong foundational knowledge of modern software architectures, cloud-native systems, data pipelines and analytics platforms.
- Motivated by ownership and long-term value creation.
- Demonstrated success scaling products from early-stage development to market.
- Exceptional organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Direct experience demoing to clients and contributing to BD.
- Comfortable operating with startup-stage ambiguity and resource constraints.
Strongly Preferred
- Domain experience within a PR, communications, or media organizations and knowledge of how communications teams operate and the data and systems they use.
- Familiarity with media analytics platforms (e.g., Meltwater, Critical Mention) and OSINT sources and methods.
