Role summary
Amazon is seeking a Software Development Engineer II to design, develop, and deliver software solutions that operate at massive scale and impact millions of customers. This role involves working across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering to operational support. You will write high-quality code, participate in code reviews, identify and fix operational issues, and collaborate with customers and stakeholders. The position offers the opportunity to evaluate and integrate new technologies, including generative AI, to enhance productivity and code quality. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can turn ambiguous problems into maintainable designs and thrives in a collaborative environment focused on building reliable and scalable software.
Key job responsibilities
- Design and implement software solutions across the full development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, system design, coding, testing, deployment, and operational support.
- Write high-quality, maintainable code and actively participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback to teammates and coaching others on best practices.
- Identify root causes of operational issues and drive permanent fixes, continuously improving system reliability and your team's operational processes.
- Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, and cross-functional peers to understand business context and ensure your solutions deliver the right outcomes.
- Evaluate and integrate new tools and approaches — including generative AI capabilities — to improve productivity, code quality, and team workflows.
A day in the life
You might start by reviewing a design document for an upcoming feature, providing feedback that strengthens the architecture before implementation begins. Later, you pair with a teammate on a tricky code change, then shift to investigating an operational metric that looks off. You document your findings, propose a fix, and discuss tradeoffs with your team. Throughout, you balance building new capabilities with improving what already exists, keeping the customer experience front and center.
About the team
Our team is focused on building reliable, scalable software that our customers depend on every day. We value collaboration, clear communication, and a genuine commitment to quality. We invest in each other's growth through mentorship, knowledge sharing, and thoughtful code reviews. As we look ahead, we are excited about expanding our technical capabilities and tackling new challenges that push us to innovate. If you want to make a meaningful impact alongside engineers who hold themselves to a high bar, this is the team for you. Basic Qualifications: - 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
- 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
- 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language Preferred Qualifications: - 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
