Role summary
Astranis is seeking a Radiation Effects Engineer specializing in modeling and theory to define the radiation and charging environments for their next-generation geostationary telecommunications satellites. This role involves developing analytical models for trapped particle populations, solar proton fluences, and galactic cosmic rays, as well as performing high-fidelity Monte Carlo simulations for radiation transport and spacecraft charging. The engineer will use Python for data processing and automation, translating complex simulation data into actionable engineering guidance for hardware, mechanical, and systems teams. A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 2+ years of experience with radiation environment and transport tools are required.
Astranis builds advanced satellites for high orbits, expanding humanity’s reach into the solar system. Today Astranis satellites provide dedicated, secure networks to highly-sophisticated customers across the globe – large enterprises, sovereign governments, and the US military.
With five satellites on orbit and many more set to launch soon, the company is servicing a backlog of more than $1 billion of commercial contracts. Astranis is the preferred satellite communications partner for buyers with stringent requirements for uptime, data security, network visibility, and customization.
Astranis has raised over $1.2 billion from some of the world’s best investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, Baillie Gifford, Blackrock, Fidelity, Franklin Templeton, and Snowpoint, and employs a team of 500 engineers and entrepreneurs. Astranis designs, builds, and operates its satellites out of its 153,000 sq. ft. headquarters in Northern California, USA.
Radiation Effects Engineer - Modeling
Astranis is bridging the digital divide by building and operating the next generation of smaller, lower-cost geostationary telecommunications satellites. As a Radiation Effects Engineer focused on modeling and theory, you will own the analytical definition of our spacecraft's radiation and charging environments, transforming physical theory into actionable design constraints. You will serve as an authority on radiation transport, orbital environment propagation, and charging physics. This modeling will help guide our hardware, mechanical, and systems teams in PCB design. Your work will directly define our engineering posture, allowing us to safely navigate geostationary orbit (GEO) and other space environments.
