Role summary

Austin Sensing Company is seeking an Embedded Systems Engineer to develop firmware and embedded software for their radar, acoustic, and RF sensors used in defense, public safety, and autonomous systems. The role involves board bring-up, peripheral configuration, driver development, sensor control, data acquisition, and implementing communication protocols. Responsibilities include debugging hardware and software interactions, optimizing for performance, and building automated tests. The engineer will work closely with electrical, RF, and FPGA engineers, taking systems from initial design through production and deployment, with a focus on reliability and maintainability.

About Austin Sensing Company

Austin Sensing Company builds radar, acoustic, and RF sensors for defense, public safety, critical infrastructure, and autonomous systems. We design and manufacture our hardware in Austin, Texas, with a focus on making high-performance sensing reliable, affordable, and widely available.

About the Role

We’re hiring an Embedded Systems Engineer to develop the firmware and embedded software that operate our sensing hardware. You’ll own code that brings up boards, controls peripherals, moves sensor data, and keeps deployed systems running reliably.

You’ll work closely with electrical, RF, FPGA, and software engineers, taking systems from initial board bring-up through production and customer deployment. We’re looking for someone who understands the hardware beneath their code and can diagnose problems at the bench and in the field.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop embedded firmware and software for microcontrollers and processors across our sensing products.

  • Bring up new boards, configure peripherals, and develop drivers alongside electrical engineers.

  • Implement sensor control, data acquisition, and communications between hardware and application software.

  • Build interfaces using protocols such as SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, and Ethernet.

  • Develop reliable startup, configuration, fault handling, and recovery behavior.

  • Implement firmware updates, diagnostics, and system health monitoring for deployed devices.

  • Debug issues involving interrupts, timing, memory, communications, and hardware interactions.

  • Optimize software for compute, memory, power, and latency requirements.

  • Build automated tests and tools for hardware validation, production testing, and field troubleshooting.

  • Document interfaces and system behavior, and use field feedback to improve reliability.

What You’ll Bring

  • Experience developing embedded firmware or software for deployed hardware products.

  • Proficiency in C or C++ and familiarity with Python or a similar language for testing and automation.

  • Strong understanding of microcontrollers, processors, interrupts, memory, and peripheral interfaces.

  • Experience with bare-metal development, real-time operating systems, or embedded Linux.

  • Hands-on board bring-up and debugging skills using JTAG/SWD debuggers, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.

  • Experience diagnosing problems across firmware, hardware, and communications.

  • Familiarity with version control, automated builds, and software testing.

  • Clear technical communication and attention to reliability and maintainability.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with radar, RF, acoustic, or other sensor systems.

  • Experience developing Linux device drivers, board support packages, or bootloaders.

  • Familiarity with DMA, high-speed data acquisition, and interfaces to FPGAs.

  • Experience with networked devices, time synchronization, and precise timestamping.

  • Experience implementing secure boot and reliable remote updates.

  • Experience supporting production testing and troubleshooting deployed systems.

  • A degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a related field.

Benefits

  • 401(k)

  • Insurance benefits

  • Lunch and dinner served daily
