Role summary

Bandwidth is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, develop, test, operate, and monitor distributed systems and REST APIs using Java/Spring and AWS. The role involves identifying and solving scaling challenges, optimizing infrastructure, and leveraging AI tools daily for code generation, design, debugging, and documentation. The engineer will mentor junior developers, collaborate with stakeholders on roadmaps, and drive continuous improvement in platform reliability. Experience with relational/non-relational databases, test automation, and a strong understanding of network protocols are required. Preferred experience includes React, messaging brokers like Kafka, and specific AWS services.

What We Are Looking For:

As a Senior Software Engineer (Number Porting team), you'll help make it as easy as possible for customers to port phone numbers in and out of Bandwidth. The team works with vendors and internal operations teams to streamline that process, and we're also building an AI agent that helps customers submit port requests and diagnose issues if they come up.

We're looking for someone who leads by example, takes deep ownership of what they build, moves fast without cutting corners, and is genuinely excited by the challenge of designing and scaling distributed systems that millions of people depend on.

What You'll Do:

  • Own your services end-to-end — from design and development to testing, operations, and production monitoring. You build it, you run it.
  • Create and maintain REST APIs (Java/Spring), customer-facing dashboards (React), and the cloud infrastructure (AWS) that powers the Numbers platform and number porting.
  • Integrate with third parties that support our porting processes
  • Help build our porting agent, which helps customers submit port requests and diagnose issues if they come up.
  • Lead solutions from start to finish, collaborating across teams to iteratively ship value aligned to customer and business needs.
  • Identify and solve scaling problems through both application development and infrastructure optimization, ensuring high availability and fault tolerance.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level developers through productive code reviews, thoughtful design discussions, and by modeling the engineering standards you want to see on the team.
  • Partner with product owners and stakeholders to translate requirements into well-designed, maintainable solutions — contributing to feature sizing and technical roadmap discussions.
  • Use AI as a core engineering tool — not occasionally, but daily. You reach for AI assistants in code generation, design exploration, debugging, and documentation, and you do it with the confidence of someone who knows the fundamentals well enough to lead the AI, not just follow it.
  • Drive continuous improvement — look critically at what we're building and how we're building it, and originate ideas that advance both our craft and our platform's reliability.

    • What You Need:

    You are the right candidate if…

  • You have 5+ years of experience building web services in a modern programming language (Java strongly preferred; C# or Go also welcome)
  • You have built and deployed applications for the cloud, preferably AWS
  • You have a solid understanding of network protocols, HTTP, and REST API design
  • You have experience designing and working with distributed systems
  • You have experience with relational and non-relational database systems
  • You have experience with scale, performance optimization, and building for fault tolerance
  • You have experience with test automation patterns and frameworks
  • You bring a continuous learning mindset — the tooling, the patterns, and the pace of change don't unsettle you, they excite you. You adapt quickly, absorb new concepts eagerly, and bring others along with you.
  • You are genuinely enthusiastic about AI — you follow the space, you experiment, and you have a point of view on where engineering is heading
  • You actively use AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, or similar) in all parts of the software development lifecycle and review AI-generated code with the same rigor as human-written code
  • You hold a 4-year technical degree or equivalent experience

  • Have hands-on experience with AWS (ECS, EKS, API Gateway, S3, SQS, Lambda, Aurora)
  • Have some experience with front-end development, preferably React
  • Have experience with messaging brokers (Kafka, ActiveMQ)
  • Have experience building agentic systems, for example with frameworks like Strands, in a professional context
  • Have telecom or number porting domain knowledge
