Staff Engineer - In-Home Order Fulfillment

Job Description

As a Staff Engineer on the In-Home Order Fulfillment team, you’ll help build the cloud services that power scheduling for in-home delivery, installation and repair. You’ll be a hands-on technical leader who turns complex needs into secure, reliable solutions and stays involved from design through production. You’ll guide technical direction across teams, simplify systems and help other engineers grow while exploring practical ways to use AI and emerging technology.

This role is hybrid, which means you will be required to work on site Monday through Thursday at the Best Buy corporate office in Richfield, Minnesota. You can work virtually from home or another non Best Buy location on Friday. The recruiter or hiring manager will provide more details during the hiring process. 

What you’ll do

• Design, build, test and support production Java applications, microservices and distributed systems.
• Lead technical design across applications, including APIs, events, data ownership, integrations and failure handling.
• Build for scale and reliability using patterns such as retries, circuit breakers, idempotency and recovery.
• Solve complex production, performance and integration issues while improving observability and operational readiness.
• Strengthen engineering practices across code quality, automated testing, security, CI/CD and production support.
• Mentor engineers and turn useful experiments in AI, automation and emerging technology into reusable practices.

Basic Qualifications

• 5 years of relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in IT, computer science, engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 5 years experience with modern Java-based frameworks for building enterprise applications and services.
• 5 years experience with event-driven and asynchronous architecture patterns, including messaging, event processing, idempotency, failure handling, and recovery.
• 3 years experience designing highly available, scalable, fault-tolerant, and resilient production systems.
• 1 year using AI-assisted or agentic engineering practices to improve software development, testing, troubleshooting, automation, and developer productivity.

Preferred Qualifications

• 7 or more years of relevant professional experience.
• Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
• Experience developing applications using JavaScript and React, or other modern JavaScript frameworks such as Angular, Vue.js, or Next.js.
• Experience designing and operating scalable microservices, APIs and event-driven distributed systems.
• Experience building highly available, fault-tolerant systems with strong testing, security, CI/CD and observability
