Role summary
The Senior Technician, Metallurgical Lab is responsible for ensuring heat treat furnaces operate properly and that processed parts meet specifications. This role involves performing various metallurgical tests (hardness, case depth, microstructure, carbon analysis, N2 layer quality, bend strength) using specialized equipment, maintaining lab equipment, and conducting audits. The technician will identify and report deviations, issue hold tickets for non-conforming parts, and assist with failure analysis. This position requires independent work, strong analytical skills, and effective communication with operators and foremen to ensure product reliability and safety compliance.
(S)He must maintain own work schedule with little supervision to cover production requirements. The individual has regular contact with department foreman and furnace operators, which requires tact to avoid friction and impose influence to obtain results. The described duties are semi-diversified, somewhat repetitive in nature, and require little supervision. The incumbent must perform analyses of facts to determine actions that could have an impact on final product reliability.
· Checks pins, links, rockers, and bushings after heat treat / finishing operations for hardness, case depth, microstructure, carbon analysis, N2 layer quality and N2 layer thickness for compliance with engineering and metallurgical specifications. This is done in the lab using various measuring equipments including Rockwell Hardness Tester, Universal Testing Machine, Carbon Determinator and Micro Hardness Tester (Knoop and Vickers). Is also responsible for bend strength testing in the lab of certain designated pins.
· Maintains and Cleans equipment as per established met lab procedures.
· On a prescribed schedule, performs and records audits of joint parts heat-treated in Heat Treat Furnaces for compliance with engineering and metallurgical specifications. Assures that the parts being run are in compliance with SPC limits. Testing process includes Rockwell Hardness Tests, Fracture Case Depth measurement, and Bend Test.
· May routinely inspect all instruments controlling atmosphere, temperature, retort speed, and load size in the heat treat Furnaces, Generators to confirm proper operation of furnace lines. Calls the attention of the operator and advises foreman of any deviation. Holds any batch processes for further inspection while instrumentation is not correct. Observes whether adjustments required are made and then initiates processes if the adjustments are performed.
· Checks Test Equipment for proper calibration used in testing arts. Inspects any non-conforming material from this operation.
· Assists with failure analysis of chain and chain components
Safety and Health – Responsible for completing required safety training, reporting and correcting any unsafe practices as appropriate, completing work activities in a safe manner, and complying with safety and health requirements for respective position.
