What is the Associate Teacher Role?
The Associate Teacher Program is a nontraditional pathway that prepares aspiring educators to become lead teachers within one year. Designed to support early-career educators, the program combines intensive coaching, professional development, and hands-on classroom experience to help participants build the skills and confidence needed to become effective teachers. Brooke Charter Schools is committed to being an anti-racist organization. In support of this commitment, the Associate Teacher Program advances the school's anti-racist and anti-bias mission by recruiting and developing Associates from diverse cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds.
The Associate Teacher program has three core components:
- One-to-one Mentoring
- Every Associate Teacher is paired with a mentor. Mentors are experienced lead teachers in their school community.
- Mentor Teachers provide Associate Teachers with targeted feedback to support growth in teaching practices through regular observations, coaching conversations, and formal monthly evaluations.
- Professional Development
- Associates participate in over 300 hours of weekly intensive professional development (PD).
- PD topics include developing culturally sustaining pedagogical practices, how to increase student talk time, and strategies to develop authentic teacher presence, etc.
- Gradual Release Teaching Model
- Associates practice skills from targeted professional development and take on more teaching components.
- Associates teach full days in their mentor's classroom and are granted opportunities to teach across their K-8th or 9th-12th-grade campus.
- Associate teachers will assume the duties of absent classroom teachers and teach across different grade levels and classrooms.
