Role summary

DuckDuckGo is seeking a Senior C++ Engineer to join their remote-first team. This role involves building high-performance code for their browser using modern C++ and Chromium. Responsibilities include implementing tracker blocking, integrating VPN and Personal Information Removal features, and ensuring browser speed. The engineer will lead complex projects from proposal to post-mortem, handle vague problems, develop clear plans, build in a large C++ codebase, and use metrics to validate solutions. The position requires advanced modern C++ expertise, experience with large C++ codebases, comfort with build systems, debuggers, and profilers, and a solid computer science foundation. Experience shipping software to a large consumer audience is also required. Bonus points for Windows development or experience with browsers, game engines, or large desktop applications.

Who We Are

Hi, we're DuckDuckGo, the online protection company and remote-first team of 400+ on a mission to raise the standard of trust online. Founded in 2008 and profitable since 2014, annual revenue now exceeds $100m USD and millions use our browser on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, our search engine, and the DuckDuckGo subscription. We also offer private, useful, and optional AI, including Duck.ai, which lets you chat privately with ChatGPT, Claude, and other AIs, all in one place.

Our culture of trust, inclusivity, and empowered project management underpins everything we do, where each team member takes full ownership of their projects, from scoping and execution to postmortem. If you're seeking end-to-end ownership of your work, you've come to the right place!

Your Team and Role

Working on the C++ Functional Team, you'll build the high-performance code at the core of DuckDuckGo's browser using modern C++ and Chromium, and work on related projects.

You can expect to work on projects like:

  • Implement tracker blocking that stops hidden trackers on every site without slowing page loads.

  • Bring VPN and Personal Information Removal into the browser through the DuckDuckGo subscription.

  • Catch startup and responsiveness regressions automatically, so the browser stays fast as it grows.

As a Senior C++/Chromium Engineer, you'll lead complex projects from proposal through post-mortem. You'll turn vague problems into clear plans, build them in a large modern C++ codebase, and use metrics to show they worked. Some days that means low-level systems work. Others, it means architecture decisions the whole team builds on. You'll collaborate with design and product, mostly asynchronously, to build features people use to protect their privacy.

About You

  • Ability to lead and collaborate on high-impact, complex projects from proposal through post-mortem

  • Skills to wrangle vague problems, propose innovative solutions, and execute them with a strong focus on metrics

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience

  • Advanced modern C++ expertise (C++23 or newer), including memory management, concurrency, and performance profiling

  • Experience driving technical work end-to-end on large-scale C++ codebases

  • Comfort with large build systems, debuggers, and profilers

  • Experience shipping software to a large consumer audience

  • Solid computer science foundation (algorithms and data structures)

  • Bonus: Windows development experience

  • Bonus: experience with browsers (Chromium, WebKit, WebView), game engines, or large desktop applications

Rotate a linked list to the right by k places. Given the head of a linked list, rotate the list to the right by k places. Input: head = [0,1,2], k = 4 Output: [2,0,1] Explanation: The list has a length of 3. Rotating by 4 is mathematically equivalent to rotating by 1 (4 mod 3 = 1).

  • 2

Minimum Window Substring Find the minimum window substring that contains all characters of another string. Input: s = "a", t = "aa" Output: "" (Empty String) Explanation: The target requires two 'a's, but the source string only contains one, making it impossible to form a valid window.

  • 3

Dot Product of Two Sparse Vectors Calculate the dot product of two sparse vectors. Input: nums1 = [0,1,0,0,2], nums2 = [0,0,0,0,5] Output: 10 Explanation: Multiplies the aligned non-zero values (2 * 5) and ignores all the zeros, yielding a dot product of 10.

  • 4

Buildings with an Ocean View Find all buildings that have an ocean view. Input: heights = [1,2,3,4] Output: [3] Explanation: Since the ocean is to the right, only the rightmost tallest building (index 3) is not blocked by any others.

Encode and Decode Strings Encode a list of strings into a single string and decode it back. Input: strs = ["","hello",""] Output: ["","hello",""] Explanation: Prepends chunk lengths and a delimiter (e.g., "0#5#hello0#") to safely encode and perfectly restore empty strings.
