Role summary

The Glasses Manufacturing and Product Design Lead, XR Hardware will be responsible for the architecture, design, manufacturing, and validation of head-worn devices, including waveguide, display engines, and Rx lenses. This role involves leading development and architecture efforts for miniaturization of novel mechanical and opto-mechanical subsystems, driving DFM and DFA from early NTI to mass production, and owning comprehensive requirements documents and tolerance stackup analyses. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field, with 12 years of experience in mechanical component design, CAD tools, and DFM/DFA, as well as 4 years of experience leading engineering teams. Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree and experience in consumer electronics, miniaturization, and scaled manufacturing processes.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 12 years of experience designing mechanical components such as plastic or metal parts, mechanical assemblies, printed circuit boards, or flexes.
  • 12 years of experience using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools such as NX or Solidworks.
  • 12 years of experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) or Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • 4 years of experience leading multiple engineering teams.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field.
  • 8 years of experience with consumer electronics with a focus on miniaturization, integration, and manufacturing of system design.
  • Experience with executing designs for precision mechanical systems, including kinematic design and tolerance analyses.
  • Experience in scaled manufacturing, including manufacturing process and line design, bring-up, and optimization.
  • Knowledge of optimal selection processes of materials, adhesives, and coatings used in optical systems.
  • Knowledge of consumer electronics development processes with the ability to adapt development approaches to designs, from prototypes to scaled manufacturing.

About the job:

As a member of a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team, you use your creativity and range of engineering experience to explore solutions to a variety of engineering problems. As a mechanical engineer, you participate in the design, analysis, and prototyping of new concepts. You work in a manufacturing and product oriented development environment and collaborate with vendors and outside sources in order to see parts through to manufacture.

The Google XR team is a group of engineers, designers, and research scientists tasked with building the platforms that enable computing required for great immersive and augmented experience and prototyping of helpful, delightful user journeys. You will be an integral member of the team, responsible for systems software design, implementation, optimization, and ongoing maintenance and enhancements.
