Role summary
Huawei Canada seeks a 12-month contract Hardware & Embedded Systems Engineer for its Human-Machine Interaction Lab. The role involves designing circuits and firmware for AI-edge devices, integrating sensor suites, implementing wireless communication, and debugging protocols. Responsibilities include rapid prototyping, board-level bring-up, technical documentation, and close collaboration with senior engineers and international partners. The ideal candidate has a Master's degree, 4+ years of experience in hardware prototyping and embedded systems, proficiency in communication protocols, and strong technical writing skills. Experience with TinyML, 3D printing, and a portfolio of functional prototypes are preferred. Travel to China is required for vendor and manufacturing coordination.
Huawei Canada has an immediate 12-month contract opening for a Hardware & Embedded Systems Engineer.
About the team:
The Huawei Human-Machine Interaction Lab unites global researchers, engineers, and designers to redefine human technology relationships through user centered, hands on research. We focus on agentic AI and multimodal interaction (voice, touch, vision, gesture) across smartphones, wearables, and emerging devices—advancing agentic workflows, multi-agent orchestration, and intuitive human-AI interfaces. By tightly integrating sensing, algorithms, and systems, our prototype driven work ships directly to products, enabling seamless task delegation and human AI collaboration at scale.
About the job:
Design custom circuits and develop firmware for compact, resource-constrained electronic devices capable of running efficient localized AI algorithms.
Integrate complex sensor suites including IMUs, displays/touch panels, microphones, optical/vision sensors, and low-power environmental sensors with proper signal conditioning and interface design.
Implement wireless communication modules with RF circuit integration and antenna layout for standard protocols including Bluetooth (BLE), Wi-Fi, Zigbee, NFC, UWB, and RFID.
Rapidly validate hardware concepts and implement Proof-of-Concepts using mainstream development platforms such as STM32, ESP32, NRF series, or Arduino ecosystems.
Develop embedded firmware with ARM architecture and RTOS, writing and optimizing custom board-level device drivers using chip manufacturer SDKs (e.g., Nordic Semiconductor, STMicroelectronics).
Debug and implement hardware communication protocols including I2C, SPI, UART, and CAN, performing independent board-level debugging and full functional verification of research prototypes.
Maintain clean code, document schematics, write testing protocols, and compile structured technical reports to support cross-functional collaboration between researchers and software engineers.
Collaborate closely with a Senior Hardware Engineer to ensure design excellence and continuously deepen technical mastery in a cutting-edge research environment.
Travel frequently to China to coordinate with supply chain vendors, manufacturing partners, and co-development laboratories.
The total target annual compensation (based on 2,080 hours per year) ranges from $106,000 - $156,000 depending on education, experience, and demonstrated expertise.
About the ideal candidate:
Master's degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related quantitative field.
4+ years of hands-on experience in electronic hardware prototyping, circuit design, and full-system functional verification.
Strong foundation in analog and digital schematic capture and component selection, including BJTs, MOSFETs, switches, and PMICs for small devices.
Proven ability to rapidly prototype hardware using mainstream embedded platforms, with solid ARM/RTOS experience, manufacturer SDK familiarity, and custom board-level driver development.
Proficient in debugging and implementing I2C, SPI, UART, and CAN protocols, with independent board-level bring-up and validation capability.
Excellent technical writing skills for documentation, schematics, and test protocols; flexible for frequent international travel, primarily to China, to coordinate with supply chain and manufacturing partners.
Experience with TinyML/TensorFlow Lite for Microcontrollers deployment on resource-constrained MCUs; 3D printing and mechanical modeling (Fusion 360, SolidWorks); and a portfolio demonstrating independent completion of a fully functional, end-to-end smart device or electronic prototype is an asset.
