Role summary
Joby is seeking a Senior Flight Control Systems Engineer to own flight control algorithm functionality, design and validate control law designs through simulations, and direct system-level verification. The role involves authoring and managing aircraft and system-level requirements, collaborating with modeling teams on simulation frameworks, and working with cross-functional teams (Aircraft, Safety, Avionics, Loads, Performance, Rotor Dynamics, Flight Test, Software Engineering) to address design challenges and refine the aircraft. Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, and Python is required, along with knowledge in classical and modern controls, optimization, multi-body dynamics, aerodynamics, electrical powertrains, digital signal processing, and real-time embedded systems. A B.S. with 5 years of experience or M.S. with 3 years of experience in a related engineering field is required.
Company Overview
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.
Overview
As a Senior Flight Control Systems Engineer, you will own functionality in the flight control algorithm, design and orchestrate simulations to validate control law design, and direct verification activities for system level behavior in labs and on-aircraft. You will author and coordinate aircraft and system level requirements and support validation activities. You will work with the modeling team to create simulations and analysis frameworks for collecting and presenting critical design data. You will focus the Aircraft, Safety, Avionics, Loads, Performance, Rotor Dynamics, and Flight Test teams to identify deficiencies and refine the aircraft design. You will work with software engineers to ensure relevant tests are run and relevant artifacts are produced, stored, and linked.
Responsibilities
- Coordination of aircraft-level and system-level teams to solve design challenges
- Recommendations on design closure based on simulation and analysis of aircraft responses
- Development and implementation of flight control features
- Development of analysis and verification frameworks
- Requirement authorship and management
Required
- B.S. + 5 years of experience, or M.S + 3 years of experience. in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, computer science, or a related field
- Knowledge in classical controls, modern state-space controls, and numerical optimization
