Role summary

Kunai is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with Scala expertise to join their growing engineering team. The role involves designing and developing scalable, immutable, and distributed systems focused on data streaming and backend services using functional Scala. You will collaborate with Agile teams to build cloud-based solutions on AWS infrastructure, writing clean, well-tested code. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of software development experience, including 4+ years in functional programming (Scala, Haskell, Clojure, Common Lisp), and 2+ years with AWS services like DynamoDB. Experience with ZIO, fintech environments, web technologies, performance tuning, and CI/CD is a plus.

Kunai is seeking a skilled Scala Engineer to join our growing engineering team. In this role, you’ll be instrumental in building high-quality products that delight our clients and thrive in production environments. You’ll work across the stack, deepen your technical expertise, and embrace new challenges in a dynamic, collaborative setting.

What You’ll Do:

Design and develop scalable, immutable, and distributed systems with a focus on data streaming and backend services using functional Scala.

Collaborate with cross-functional Agile teams to build and deliver robust, cloud-based solutions, leveraging AWS infrastructure and modern development practices.

Write clean, efficient, and well-tested code, contributing to an engineering culture that values quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Take initiative in solving complex problems and push boundaries with a hands-on, can-do attitude.

What We’re Looking For:

5+ years of professional experience in software application development.

3+ yrs of experience with GCP and AWS, cloud migration background a plus.

4+ years of hands-on experience with functional programming (e.g., Scala, Haskell, Clojure, Common Lisp).

2+ years of experience working with DynamoDB, PostgresDB.

Bonus Points For:

Familiarity with the ZIO framework, Finagle libraries.

Prior experience in fintech or banking environments.

4+ years working with open-source web technologies.

2+ years of experience in performance tuning and monitoring.

1+ years working with CI/CD pipelines and automation tooling.

Hands-on experience optimizing high-scale server systems.

AWS Developer or Architect Certification.

Minimum Degree Required:

Bachelor’s Degree, in lieu of a degree, demonstrating in addition to the minimum years of experience required for the role, three years of specialized training and/or progressively responsible work experience in technology for each missing year of college is required
