Job Description
L3Harris is seeking a Sr. Specialist, Tooling Quality Engineer to support tooling definition and inspect ability for molds, fixtures, jigs, assembly tooling, and other manufacturing equipment. This role ensures tooling designs incorporate clear, functional, and verifiable requirements that support manufacturing quality, process capability, and product conformance. The engineer collaborates with Tooling Engineering and cross‑functional teams to establish appropriate GD&T requirements, resolve drawing and tolerance issues, and ensure tooling remains manufacturable, inspectable, and maintainable throughout its lifecycle. The position also supports tooling risk assessments, supplier quality evaluations, and initiatives that improve early visibility into tooling quality before production impact.
Essential Functions
• Review tooling drawings using ASME Y14.5 principles and sound engineering practices.
• Establish functional datum schemes and tolerancing strategies for molds, fixtures, jigs, assembly tooling, and inspection tooling.
• Identify and resolve ambiguous, conflicting, incomplete, or nonfunctional drawing callouts.
• Perform tolerance stack‑up analyses to evaluate tooling fit, alignment, interchangeability, and manufacturability.
• Review tooling designs to ensure requirements can be manufactured, inspected, maintained, and used effectively in production.
• Define tooling inspection criteria, acceptance methods, and measurement approaches prior to fabrication.
• Evaluate potential impacts of tool wear, damage, distortion, or adjustment on production hardware.
• Support tooling supplier QMS reviews for compliance with AS9100, ISO 9001, and applicable quality requirements.
• Provide technical guidance on GD&T, design for inspection, tooling quality, and risk management.
• Travel requirements less than 10%.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and 6 years of related experience; OR Graduate degree and 4 years of related experience; OR in lieu of a degree, 10 years of tooling, quality, or manufacturing experience.
• Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 and engineering drawing interpretation.
Preferred Additional Skills
• Formal GD&T certification (e.g., ASME Y14.5 Professional Certification).
• Experience using or programming CMMs and automated inspection systems.
• Experience developing engineering standards, drawing practices, or GD&T/metrology training materials.
• Experience with CAD tools such as Creo and PLM systems such as Windchill.
• Experience supporting new product development, advanced manufacturing, or R&D programs.
• Experience applying GD&T to tooling, molds, fixtures, or production hardware.
• Strong understanding of tolerancing, datum structures, and tolerance stack‑up analysis.
• Knowledge of machining, fabrication, assembly, tooling design, metrology, and manufacturing processes.
• Experience developing tooling inspection specifications, acceptance criteria, and verification methods.
• Experience with Measurement System Analysis, Gage R&R, and measurement uncertainty.
• Experience establishing tool wear limits, inspection intervals, and re‑verification criteria.
• Experience working within ISO 9001 or AS9100 quality systems.
• Experience supporting supplier quality reviews, tooling acceptance, issue resolution, or corrective action.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
