Role summary
Mercury is seeking a Head of Product to lead its Personal Banking division. This role involves end-to-end ownership, including setting product strategy, managing a team of product managers, driving growth and engagement, and overseeing business performance. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record in consumer product leadership, experience with AI-led products, and a deep understanding of product craft and customer-centric approaches. Key responsibilities include building a highly engaging personal banking experience, defining product propositions across various financial services, and scaling the product management organization. The role requires exceptional cross-functional leadership and sound judgment in a regulated environment.
In 1967, John Shepherd-Barron reached his bank minutes after closing and could not get at his own money. In the bath that evening, he thought of a chocolate bar dispenser and swapped the chocolate for cash. On 27 June, outside a Barclays branch on Enfield High Street, an actor named Reg Varney drew £10 from the world's first cash machine. It took a four-digit code (originally six, until his wife told him nobody remembers six). The bank's hours had stopped being the customer's problem.
Nearly sixty years later, the bar has moved, but the test hasn't: a personal financial product is judged on whether it fits the life of the person using it. People do not read documentation, forgive a confusing screen, or care how the ledger works. They want one place that makes sense of everything — spending, saving, planning, investing — and that anticipates rather than reports: where they stand, what deserves attention, what to do next. Mercury is building personal banking* to that standard.
Personal Banking is how Mercury earns a place in someone's financial life. We're looking for a Head of Product to own it end-to-end: setting product strategy, leading a team of product managers, driving growth and engagement, and owning business performance.
