Role summary

Meta is seeking a Battery System Engineer to own the design and integration of battery packs for their state-of-the-art Reality Labs devices. This role involves defining battery requirements, collaborating with product engineering and cross-functional teams (safety, reliability, operations, software), and supporting manufacturing and assembly processes at supplier sites. Responsibilities include developing electrical and thermal characterization requirements, performing failure analysis, and ensuring system-level performance metrics are met. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience, with at least 2 years of experience working with Li-Ion batteries and Battery Management Systems, and experience with PCB schematic capture and layout using Altium. Experience in consumer electronics is also required.

As a Battery System Engineer at Meta, you will take ownership of the Battery pack electrical designs and their integrations to power the state-of-the-art devices developed by Reality Labs. You will work closely with our product engineering teams to define battery requirements, aiming to find optimal options for product volume, weight, and run time. You will provide build support during New Product Introduction activities to ensure that manufacturing processes align with design intent. Collaboration with safety, reliability, operations, software and other cross-functional partners will be essential to integrate the battery into the final system and meet system level performance metrics. Supporting final assembly activities at supplier sites to ensure proper integration of the battery into the final system will be part of your duties, as well as assisting the sourcing team with cost analysis, supplier audits, and market analysis.

Responsibilities
  • Work with product groups to define and deliver battery packs as per requirement
  • Work with vendors to develop battery packs per Meta’s requirements
  • Develop Electrical and interconnect architectures for battery management systems
  • Develop engineering requirements and specifications, test and validate plans for manufacturing and characterization of battery packs
  • Develop test boards and test fixtures to validate the performance of batteries
  • Develop processes, frameworks and best practices to scale designs across multiple programs
  • Develop Electrical and thermal battery characterization requirements
  • Support hardware integration related to interfacing hardware and connection issues
  • Provide build support during early New Product Introduction builds to ensure that the process can meet the design intent
  • Perform failure analysis, root cause analysis and create corrective action plans; communicate problems and solutions to cross functional team members
  • Identify system interactions and design factors which impact battery module performance such as charge time affected by system thermals and battery age, interaction with accessories and help assist product claims on battery runtimes
  • Perform battery gas gauge performance characterization at both module and system levels
  • Support software integration of batteries into system for both functionality and performance
  • Domestic and international travel to suppliers and test labs as needed

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, and/or equivalent industry experience
  • 2+ years experience in working with Li-Ion batteries
  • Experience with Battery Management systems including fuel gauging
  • Experience applying electrical engineering fundamentals into product solutions
  • Experience working on consumer electronics
  • Experience with PCB schematic capture and layout design with Altium
  • Experience communicating with and working collaboratively with Product Design engineers and other hardware/software cross-functional team members

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with battery protection circuits, communication protocols such as I2C, UART, charger interactions
  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
  • Electrical Engineering background in analog and digital circuits, schematic and layout capture tools
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
  • Experience in programming in languages such as Python or C and/or other scripting languages
  • 2+ years of experience in supporting Lithium-ion battery based testing
  • Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
  • Masters or PhD in Electrical Engineering or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience with high volume production
  • Experience with statistical tools, Design of Experiments and packages such as JMP or Minitab
