Meta is seeking a Data Center Technician Intern to join their Fleet Operations, Reliability and Central Engineering (FORCE) team. This 12-week program offers hands-on experience in a live data center environment, supporting the health and reliability of Meta's global server fleet. Interns will work under supervision, learning data center fundamentals, procedure execution, and hardware troubleshooting. Key responsibilities include responding to tickets, performing hardware replacements and inspections, managing inventory, and contributing to documentation. A working familiarity with Linux, basic server hardware understanding, and interest in networking are essential. The role requires attention to detail, adaptability, and a safety-first mindset.
Responsibilities
- Work within Meta's ticketing system in support of the health of Meta's server fleet, responding promptly to assigned tickets.
- Follow documented procedures (MOPs) to support server hardware replacements, network hardware reseats and swaps, and repairs.
- Perform routine physical inspections of server and network hardware in data halls, including cabling, serial number, and power verification.
- Perform physical cabling tasks, including fiber and copper connections, optic (transceiver) reseats and swaps, and cable cleaning, as directed.
- Assist with ticket resolution by gathering requested information, conducting initial triage on hardware and Linux OS related issues with guidance, and communicating clearly with the team to escalate issues outside your scope or expertise.
- Assist with projects, including new capacity and retrofits, and repairs throughout the data center.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, help create and improve documentation for the global data center knowledge base, and accurately pull and manage inventory (optics, cables, server spares) according to established processes.
- Operate hand and power tools (such as drills, screwdrivers, safety cutters, and lifts) safely and in accordance with site safety and security protocols, to support installation and maintenance tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a full-time, degree-seeking program and in the process of obtaining an Associate's, Bachelor's or Master’s degree program in a technology-related field
- Intent to return to the degree program after completion of the internship
- Experience with Linux fundamentals, including basic command line navigation
- Foundational understanding of computer hardware including familiarity with common components and basic troubleshooting concepts
- Ability to follow detailed procedures and work under close supervision, with tasks and tickets assigned and reviewed by a Manager or Team Lead
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to safely lift, push, pull, and move at least 50 pounds (22 kg), walk long distances, and stand for extended periods in a data center environment with temperatures ranging from 79°F to 105°F (26°C to 40°C), as required to move repair carts, transport equipment and supplies, and install or replace server hardware components
- Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework or certifications in IT, networking, computer science, or related fields (for example CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, fiber or optical cabling)
- Server hardware repair experience
- Conceptual knowledge of networking technologies such as DNS and DHCP, and storage concepts such as RAID
- Experience modifying or developing in Python, SQL, or shell scripting
- Experience in data center environments or IT support roles, including school, volunteer, or hobbyist experience
- Foundational understanding of networking concepts such as IP addressing and the role of common network devices
